[00:00:54] Alright, hello and welcome to another episode of the Jewelry Resellers Podcast.
[00:01:00] I am your jewelry reselling bestie Desiree, and today we're going to talk about something
[00:01:07] that I think when you're a beginner this can be something that could be overwhelming
[00:01:14] because when you're just starting as a jewelry reseller you don't exactly know
[00:01:19] what you should and should not be looking for because if you don't have a lot of experience
[00:01:25] all jewelry can look the same to you.
[00:01:28] So today we're going to talk about the jewelry that I believe or I recommend you
[00:01:35] do not buy, and the reason why I say that is because these jewelry pieces that I'm
[00:01:43] going to talk about today just don't have a very high resale value.
[00:01:49] Now if you're looking to buy jewelry just for your own personal use or maybe you want
[00:01:52] to give it as a gift or maybe you just like it for whatever reason, that's totally fine
[00:01:58] and that's not really the perspective that I'm coming from today.
[00:02:03] Today I am going to focus on helping you learn to buy jewelry pieces that you can
[00:02:10] actually make money on if you decide to resell them.
[00:02:14] So sometimes knowing what to buy is more about knowing what not to buy and so that is going
[00:02:22] to be the focus of today's podcast.
[00:02:26] So before we get started on today's topic you know I always like to remind you to
[00:02:30] join our newsletter family because when you do I'm going to send you a list of
[00:02:35] the 20 best-selling vintage jewelry brands that I believe all resellers should know
[00:02:42] about. Okay and I'm going to give you that list for free. As a matter of fact when you sign up
[00:02:46] for the newsletter you can download it instantly and if you do want to do that
[00:02:50] all you have to do is head on over to the website that's jewelry resellers
[00:02:55] podcast dot com. Again that's jewelry resellers podcast dot com. I will also
[00:03:01] have a link for you in the YouTube description if you are listening to
[00:03:06] this on YouTube or I will have a link for you in the show notes.
[00:03:11] Okay so let's go ahead and focus on the types of jewelry you don't want to buy
[00:03:16] as a jewelry reseller. Alright because we want to take into consideration the
[00:03:21] resale value of every piece of jewelry that we source when we are building our
[00:03:27] jewelry reselling business.
[00:03:29] Okay now sometimes you will come across people selling all kinds of new
[00:03:37] in package jewelry and I just want to start off by saying you want to be
[00:03:43] really really careful with that because a lot of times those are pieces that
[00:03:47] are mass produced or maybe they could be knockoffs of more higher-end
[00:03:52] jewelry pieces. So be careful if you see someone especially I see this a lot
[00:03:58] on Facebook marketplace sometimes Craigslist sometimes offer up where
[00:04:05] people will just be selling all this brand new jewelry still in the wrapper
[00:04:11] and then they'll throw out brand names you know like Tiffany I don't know
[00:04:17] that's the only one I can think of right now but just be careful with
[00:04:21] those okay because usually if they're saying they're high-end brands and
[00:04:26] they're they're you know selling them for really cheap then definitely
[00:04:32] that's a red flag of something you want to stay away from okay so when you're
[00:04:37] considering the resale value of jewelry certain brands may not retain or
[00:04:42] increase in value as well as other brands. So typically things that can
[00:04:49] affect resale value include brand recognition you know the name
[00:04:56] exclusivity you know exactly where or for whom these pieces were made for. We
[00:05:04] also want to look at and think about the craftsmanship you know how the
[00:05:08] pieces are made the tools that are used to make these pieces of course the
[00:05:12] materials and we also want to consider the initial price point that
[00:05:18] these jewelry pieces were first sold at okay so think about all of those
[00:05:23] things when you are looking at jewelry pieces to resell and a lot of this
[00:05:29] stuff probably will apply to more newer brands of jewelry some of these
[00:05:35] points I'm going to talk about today don't really apply to vintage or antique
[00:05:40] jewelry although sometimes it can but I know a lot of us are jewelry
[00:05:46] resellers and we sell pretty much whatever we can find so we want to be
[00:05:52] knowledgeable even about the newer pieces of jewelry that we stumble
[00:05:58] across when we are outsourcing or maybe somebody might contact us and say
[00:06:03] hey I've got a bunch of jewelry here would you like to take a look at it
[00:06:06] you know and maybe they might be able to make you a deal or something like
[00:06:11] that okay so here is a look at the types of jewelry or the brands that
[00:06:17] you probably want to stay away from as it relates to reselling okay so remember
[00:06:24] I'm talking about and I'm only focused on the resale value if these are jewelry
[00:06:30] brands or pieces that you want to buy for your own personal enjoyment
[00:06:34] that's totally different okay all right so let's go ahead and get started
[00:06:39] because I do have a list here like I always do so I wrote a list of the
[00:06:45] types of brands or specific you know considerations that just don't hold the
[00:06:53] value retention or even the customer satisfaction as it relates to specific
[00:06:59] brands of jewelry and I want to say I mean maybe it's not nice of me to
[00:07:04] say but I do want to say that these are probably the worst brands of
[00:07:08] jewelry that you can pick up for reselling okay I'll just put it out
[00:07:14] there I'm gonna be very direct as it as it concerns this because I don't want
[00:07:19] you to make any mistakes you know buying this stuff and then thinking
[00:07:24] that you're going to be able to flip it for a high profit alright so the
[00:07:29] first type of jewelry we want to stay away from and not buy for reselling
[00:07:34] is what I call fast fashion jewelry brands okay now these brands typically
[00:07:41] produce a lot of trendy low-cost pieces that are not really meant to
[00:07:48] last a long time and you see this type of jewelry in stores like H&M
[00:07:54] forever 21 maybe online like on sites like fashion Nova she in okay so be
[00:08:04] very careful buying jewelry from these types of fast fashion fast jewelry
[00:08:11] places because these actually don't even have a a resale value like you
[00:08:18] might buy a necklace for ten dollars you're lucky if you can resell that for
[00:08:22] five dollars alright so number two the type of jewelry or the brand of
[00:08:30] jewelry that you don't want to buy for reselling is discount retail jewelry so
[00:08:37] jewelry sold and like those big-box discount retail stores you know like
[00:08:43] Walmart sometimes Target can off you know often be of much lower quality and
[00:08:50] it's designed to be affordable rather than long-lasting now you see this a
[00:08:57] lot at Target Target does some collabs sometimes I know they target just did
[00:09:03] a collab with Kendra Scott and the Kendra Scott target brand jewelry
[00:09:09] pieces do not resell for as much or very well as just the regular Kendra
[00:09:18] Scott jewelry pieces okay so a lot of times when these brands do collabs
[00:09:24] the pieces are not made as well and they're not made with as good of
[00:09:31] materials either so be careful with that because those pieces just do not
[00:09:36] resell very well you know if if at all okay alright so number three of
[00:09:45] the type of jewelry you don't want to buy for reselling is the jewelry
[00:09:50] from some of these direct sales or MLM brands jewelry brands that are sold
[00:09:57] through multi-level marketing which is MLM might not always provide the best
[00:10:03] quality for the price due to the business model and the reputation of
[00:10:09] the company alright so a very popular brand that a lot of us probably
[00:10:16] already know about is paparazzi jewelry now paparazzi jewelry I think
[00:10:23] everything is five dollars or something like that and I've had a lot of it
[00:10:29] throughout my jewelry reselling career because I do a lot of bulk buys and
[00:10:34] you know a lot of paparazzi representatives will go out of business
[00:10:39] and then they just sell all of their inventory alright but the resale value
[00:10:45] for this type of jewelry is not very high again a lot of people myself
[00:10:52] included avoid this type of jewelry as much as we can so we're talking about
[00:10:57] brands like paparazzi I think origami owl some people say Stella and dot I
[00:11:05] have been able to sell some Stella and dot you know some of the more
[00:11:11] higher end pieces of that brand but in general it just does not resell very
[00:11:17] well okay next up the next type of jewelry that we don't want to buy for
[00:11:27] resale is the generic mall jewelry kiosk you know you know when you're
[00:11:33] walking in the mall those little kiosks they've got jewelry out there and it's
[00:11:37] it's unbranded or it's a brand no one's ever heard of that type of stuff you
[00:11:43] want to stay away from now I'm not saying it's not pretty and I'm not
[00:11:46] saying that it's not you know it's not gonna make a beautiful gift to
[00:11:50] somebody if if if that's what you wanted to buy however it's just not
[00:11:55] going to be something that you can resell at a very high price alright
[00:12:00] generic brands found in mall kiosks might not offer the best
[00:12:04] craftsmanship or material quality you know they're more focused on volume and
[00:12:12] selling as much as they can at the highest price they can and most people
[00:12:18] are not looking for that type of stuff you know part of reselling is
[00:12:22] having the things on hand that people are actually searching for and
[00:12:27] nobody is searching for jewelry that's sold on you know at the kiosk in in the
[00:12:38] mall I don't know anybody that's actually searching for that you know
[00:12:41] online or anywhere else I mean yes people might go to the mall and and
[00:12:47] decide right then and there oh this is pretty I'll pick it up but nobody's
[00:12:51] really searching for that okay alright so number five of the type of
[00:12:58] jewelry we don't want to buy for reselling we have to be careful with
[00:13:02] certain drop shipping brands now I don't think a lot of us really are
[00:13:08] involved in the whole drop shipping thing but sometimes people will try to
[00:13:15] source this way through drop shipping and I don't know if people are aware
[00:13:19] that they're actually buying something from a vendor who is drop shipping
[00:13:25] brands that rely heavily on drop shipping often offer a wide range of
[00:13:32] products with inconsistent quality and origin okay so be very very careful I
[00:13:40] don't know that a whole lot of us are really sourcing this way but I
[00:13:45] just wanted to throw it out there in case someone is because it is very
[00:13:50] hit or miss with what you can potentially get as it relates to the
[00:13:57] quality of the jewelry alright point number six again the type of jewelry
[00:14:05] we don't want to buy and that is brands with frequent complaints about
[00:14:08] metal allergies again this doesn't happen a whole lot but sometimes people
[00:14:14] will ask you what you know what what the jewelry is made of you know is
[00:14:22] it 14 karat gold is it silver is it stainless steel whatever because there
[00:14:26] are people who do have allergies to this and some brands might use metals
[00:14:31] that are that commonly cause allergic reactions such as nickel and so a lot
[00:14:37] of people who are shopping or consumers or people who are buying they
[00:14:42] want to steer clear of this because they have a sensitivity for whatever
[00:14:47] kind of metal alright so learn about the different types of metals of the
[00:14:54] jewelry that you plan to resource or resell I guess resource as well and make
[00:15:00] sure that you are not buying like cheap cheap metals you know that can
[00:15:06] cause a problem again I don't think a lot of us are doing this but I
[00:15:10] wanted to make sure I mentioned it because it is something to consider
[00:15:14] alright the other things that we want to be careful about is brands with poor
[00:15:21] craftsmanship again I think if we are being careful with what we're sourcing
[00:15:25] then we will be able to know okay I'm gonna stay away from this particular
[00:15:30] brand because you know the jewelry never lasts longer than one or two
[00:15:35] wearings so knowing that you are finding a type of jewelry that is
[00:15:44] well-made will go a long way as it relates to you being able to resell that
[00:15:51] piece quickly okay because you know you can sell unbranded jewelry pieces
[00:15:56] especially if they're well made or if they have a really good reputation
[00:16:01] you know things like Giuliana jewelry I mean obviously we're not talking
[00:16:06] about you know Giuliana jewelry here but I'm just saying that sometimes
[00:16:11] unbranded jewelry has a really huge following and that's just one example
[00:16:16] okay so we also want to think about like I said because I wrote this on my
[00:16:27] list brands with no clear branding or identity I know I just threw out
[00:16:30] Giuliana jewelry because it's never marked but in general jewelry that lacks
[00:16:37] distinctive branding or design can often be a struggle to sell and also
[00:16:43] hold its value or appeal to buyers because a lot of no-name jewelry and
[00:16:52] again nobody's really looking for that sometimes buyers are looking for
[00:16:57] like they'll say I need a red beaded necklace for a particular outfit so
[00:17:00] they'll search that but that doesn't happen a lot and you have much
[00:17:06] better luck with branded jewelry okay so if you have a choice to buy
[00:17:11] jewelry that is marked versus unmarked I always say buy the marked jewelry
[00:17:17] because that will help you sell it but again it has to be something that is
[00:17:21] high quality something that is going to last and something that people are
[00:17:26] looking for now last point on my list is be careful of overpriced costume
[00:17:36] jewelry brands some brands sell costume jewelry at a price point that
[00:17:41] doesn't even match the material or the design or the artistic value you know
[00:17:46] making making those types of pieces a very poor choice for long-term
[00:17:51] investment or for reselling you know sometimes I've seen this with like
[00:17:56] Chico's jewelry and stuff like that now I love Chico's jewelry but
[00:17:59] sometimes those pieces are ridiculously expensive and it's not even you know
[00:18:05] real gold or it's not even real gemstones or whatever so some of these
[00:18:12] jewelry brands while they do have a long you know a I guess high-following
[00:18:18] or you know they're very popular just make sure that it makes sense for
[00:18:23] you as it relates to your return and what you can make on reselling that
[00:18:29] piece you know because sometimes you may not necessarily make much money if you
[00:18:35] have to buy you know spend so much to get the piece in the first place okay
[00:18:40] so that's just something to think about as well now I did think about a
[00:18:46] few brands of jewelry that I would stay away from and I want to share
[00:18:52] share that list with you now this list isn't all the you know all of the
[00:18:57] brands that I say don't buy for reselling and there may be exceptions you
[00:19:01] know to this list here and there but just in general I do not I do not pick
[00:19:08] these particular brands for reselling jewelry and this isn't to say that I
[00:19:13] don't have a few of these pieces hanging out in my inventory somewhere
[00:19:17] because I'm sure I do but I do not purposely pick up these particular
[00:19:25] okay so number one is Charming Charlie remember that store it was like the
[00:19:30] accessory store where you could buy jewelry handbags scarves accessories
[00:19:36] whatever in pretty much every color under the rainbow but the charming
[00:19:40] Charlie jewelry does not hold a high resale value so if you see it when
[00:19:45] you're outsourcing unless it is something spectacular I would leave
[00:19:50] that behind all right brand number two I recommend you don't pick up that's
[00:19:55] Claire's jewelry you know that Claire's store in the mall you know and
[00:20:00] they've got all kinds of accessories in there Claire's is not a brand that
[00:20:06] holds a high resale value if if you can resell it at all that's definitely
[00:20:12] a brand I would stay away from for reselling number three is time and true
[00:20:19] that is a Walmart brand they have a lot of jewelry I'm sure if you've been in
[00:20:24] a Walmart you've seen the jewelry section time and true jewelry does not
[00:20:29] resell it for anything so I would stay away from that again if you want to
[00:20:36] buy it for personal use that's fine but it's not going to bring you a
[00:20:39] whole lot of money for reselling now I already talked about these brands
[00:20:46] paparazzi origami origami owl and Stella and dot I think those are MLM
[00:20:54] brands and again not very good for reselling I mean unless somebody gives
[00:20:58] it all to you know gives it to you for free and you try to you know sell
[00:21:03] it just to get something out of it but I would not source those
[00:21:08] particular brands or or try to resell them the next one I have is a new day
[00:21:15] from Target okay a new day yes they make jewelry and no I would not list
[00:21:21] it for reselling again if somebody gave it to me for free maybe I would but
[00:21:26] I probably would not I probably would not spend the time listing that I
[00:21:31] just wouldn't another brand is Universal Thread that is also a
[00:21:37] Target brand and they do have some jewelry pieces again I would not pick
[00:21:41] those up for reselling also Wild Fable that is also a Target brand I think
[00:21:49] they sell well they make jewelry sunglasses accessories like belts and
[00:21:56] things like that again not a whole lot of resale value so leave it if you
[00:22:02] and this one now this one is kind of mixed and this brand is Avon and what I
[00:22:10] wrote in my notes I wrote vintage Avon yes newer Avon no now not all vintage
[00:22:19] Avon jewelry you know sells for you know a lot but more people are looking
[00:22:26] for vintage Avon jewelry than they are newer Avon jewelry pieces so if you do
[00:22:32] come across some vintage Avon jewelry I would definitely look it up and
[00:22:35] research it because more people are looking for that than they are you
[00:22:41] know versus the newer pieces okay all right so these are some things to
[00:22:48] think about as it relates to the jewelry you don't want to buy for
[00:22:51] reselling I know that there's probably more out there that I just either
[00:22:59] couldn't think about or maybe it's stuff that I just don't know about but
[00:23:03] for the for the most part anything that is mass-produced or anything that
[00:23:08] is just really cheaply made or you know places you know where it's really
[00:23:14] easily accessible in places like Walmart Target and whatever for the
[00:23:20] most part those are not the jewelry that we're looking for to resell okay so
[00:23:24] just leave that stuff behind but like I said hey if you get some for free
[00:23:30] great it could work out for you you know you just really have to have to
[00:23:37] know your stuff and you really have to know like I said what people are
[00:23:41] looking for so let me know your thoughts on this episode do you have
[00:23:46] any jewelry brands that you just will not buy for whatever reason I'd love to
[00:23:52] know you can leave me a comment and let me know your thoughts and yeah that's
[00:23:59] gonna be it for this episode well I hope you enjoyed and I want to thank
[00:24:04] you so much for spending this time with me I will check in with you
[00:24:08] again really soon
