[00:01:00] [SPEAKER_00]: My name is Desiree and yes, I am your Jewelry Reselling Vesti.
[00:01:04] [SPEAKER_00]: Today we are going to talk about a question that I got not too long ago.
[00:01:10] [SPEAKER_00]: And that is when and why should jewelry be appraised?
[00:01:16] [SPEAKER_00]: Now as jewelry resellers, we don't always have to get our jewelry pieces appraised.
[00:01:23] [SPEAKER_00]: But we're going to talk about today when you should consider that and why you should consider
[00:01:30] [SPEAKER_00]: that depending on the type of jewelry pieces that you're selling, the type of jewelry
[00:01:35] [SPEAKER_00]: pieces that you may even be collecting.
[00:01:37] [SPEAKER_00]: Like maybe you have no desire to sell the piece and you just want to keep it
[00:01:42] [SPEAKER_00]: because you love it.
[00:01:43] [SPEAKER_00]: Alright, so before we get into that, I always like to remind you to make sure you visit
[00:01:48] [SPEAKER_00]: our website which is JewelryResellersPodcast.com because on that website, you can access a list
[00:01:56] [SPEAKER_00]: of the 20 best selling vintage jewelry brands that I think all resellers should know about.
[00:02:01] [SPEAKER_00]: You can also listen to past episodes.
[00:02:03] [SPEAKER_00]: We have some blog posts and announcements there as well.
[00:02:06] [SPEAKER_00]: So make sure you check it out.
[00:02:07] [SPEAKER_00]: I would love it if you did.
[00:02:10] [SPEAKER_00]: Alright, let's go ahead and get into today's topic.
[00:02:12] [SPEAKER_00]: Now I do have my notes in front of me because we do have a lot to cover today.
[00:02:17] [SPEAKER_00]: And I want to make sure that I don't forget anything and I want to make sure that I am
[00:02:21] [SPEAKER_00]: as thorough and giving you as much information that I can as it relates to this.
[00:02:28] [SPEAKER_00]: Alright, so like I said, we're going to talk about when and why jewelry should be appraised.
[00:02:33] [SPEAKER_00]: And this is going to be a guide for us from the reseller's perspective because as a reseller,
[00:02:40] [SPEAKER_00]: there are certain things that we need to keep in mind and certain things that we need to take
[00:02:44] [SPEAKER_00]: into consideration when we are evaluating whether or not a jewelry piece needs to be appraised.
[00:02:50] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay?
[00:02:52] [SPEAKER_00]: So jewelry appraisal is a critical step for any reseller looking to accurately price
[00:02:57] [SPEAKER_00]: and sell valuable jewelry pieces.
[00:03:00] [SPEAKER_00]: Understanding when and why you need an appraisal can help you protect your business,
[00:03:05] [SPEAKER_00]: maximize your profits and provide buyers with confidence in the authenticity and value
[00:03:11] [SPEAKER_00]: of the jewelry that you're selling.
[00:03:14] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so let's start by thinking about when is a good time to have jewelry appraised?
[00:03:20] [SPEAKER_00]: Alright, and when I did my research, I came up with six reasons why you may want to consider this
[00:03:28] [SPEAKER_00]: or I should say six reasons when you want to consider this.
[00:03:31] [SPEAKER_00]: Alright, so when to have jewelry appraised?
[00:03:34] [SPEAKER_00]: Reason number one is before selling high value pieces.
[00:03:38] [SPEAKER_00]: Now I think initially we all kind of already know this, but if you're dealing with high value
[00:03:44] [SPEAKER_00]: jewelry such as certain antique and vintage pieces or even some specific designer pieces,
[00:03:51] [SPEAKER_00]: it is important to get an appraisal to ensure that you're selling the item at a fair market price.
[00:03:58] [SPEAKER_00]: This can prevent undervaluing rare or luxury jewelry pieces.
[00:04:03] [SPEAKER_00]: Alright, so if you have something that you believe is high value and you've kind of done your own
[00:04:08] [SPEAKER_00]: research and your research is telling you, you know, this is something pretty spectacular.
[00:04:14] [SPEAKER_00]: I do want to get it appraised just to make sure that I know what I have and I know the
[00:04:20] [SPEAKER_00]: accuracy of what it is worth.
[00:04:22] [SPEAKER_00]: That's definitely a time when you want to consider getting your jewelry appraised.
[00:04:28] [SPEAKER_00]: Alright, reason number two is to confirm authenticity.
[00:04:32] [SPEAKER_00]: If you're unsure about the authenticity of a gemstone precious metal or designer mark,
[00:04:38] [SPEAKER_00]: a professional appraisal can verify whether the piece is genuine or if it includes any enhancements
[00:04:45] [SPEAKER_00]: or treatments.
[00:04:47] [SPEAKER_00]: Alright, because sometimes people do repair jewelry pieces, sometimes people will add things,
[00:04:52] [SPEAKER_00]: take things off and so getting a piece professionally appraised,
[00:04:56] [SPEAKER_00]: someone with a trained eye will be able to tell you if this piece has been altered or, you know,
[00:05:03] [SPEAKER_00]: something manipulated in any way.
[00:05:06] [SPEAKER_00]: Alright, this is crucial when selling to discerning buyers or when advertising pieces as high end
[00:05:12] [SPEAKER_00]: or luxury.
[00:05:14] [SPEAKER_00]: So we always want to make sure that we do our absolute best to communicate to our buyers
[00:05:19] [SPEAKER_00]: exactly what it is that we are selling and sometimes we don't know.
[00:05:23] [SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes we don't have any idea of, you know, what the piece is,
[00:05:28] [SPEAKER_00]: you know, what makes it a standout piece or what could make it a high value piece.
[00:05:33] [SPEAKER_00]: And so getting an appraisal will help you figure all of that out.
[00:05:38] [SPEAKER_00]: Alright, reason number three to as it relates to when having,
[00:05:42] [SPEAKER_00]: when to have your jewelry appraised and this is for insurance purposes.
[00:05:47] [SPEAKER_00]: Appraisals are necessary for ensuring valuable jewelry.
[00:05:51] [SPEAKER_00]: If you're holding expensive inventory or selling on consignment,
[00:05:56] [SPEAKER_00]: having an up-to-date appraisal ensures that you recover the items value in case of loss,
[00:06:03] [SPEAKER_00]: theft or damage.
[00:06:04] [SPEAKER_00]: Buyers may also request an appraisal for insurance coverage post purchase.
[00:06:10] [SPEAKER_00]: Alright, so insurance is a big thing as it relates to high end jewelry.
[00:06:14] [SPEAKER_00]: You know, I don't really know a whole lot about it because I don't have super high
[00:06:20] [SPEAKER_00]: end jewelry pieces that I personally have insured, but this is something that you definitely
[00:06:25] [SPEAKER_00]: want to think about if you are looking to ensure your inventory or even your high
[00:06:31] [SPEAKER_00]: end jewelry pieces in your own personal collection.
[00:06:35] [SPEAKER_00]: Alright, reason number four as it relates to when to have jewelry appraised and that
[00:06:41] [SPEAKER_00]: is when it is estate jewelry or inherited jewelry pieces.
[00:06:46] [SPEAKER_00]: Estate sales often contain heirloom jewelry with unknown origins and value before listing
[00:06:53] [SPEAKER_00]: a state jewelry for resale an appraisal can determine its worth, historical significance
[00:06:58] [SPEAKER_00]: and materials. This is especially helpful for inherited collections that haven't been properly
[00:07:05] [SPEAKER_00]: valued. So a lot of times we don't know the history of certain jewelry pieces.
[00:07:11] [SPEAKER_00]: I mean we can do our own research to a certain degree, but sometimes learning more or figuring
[00:07:18] [SPEAKER_00]: out more past that can be difficult and this is where a professional appraiser can definitely help
[00:07:24] [SPEAKER_00]: you. Alright so if you do have some inherited jewelry or if you come across something at an
[00:07:29] [SPEAKER_00]: estate sale or an auction, you know keep in mind that you may have to invest in the price
[00:07:36] [SPEAKER_00]: of an appraisal in addition to the cost of the pieces that you are purchasing. Alright so always
[00:07:42] [SPEAKER_00]: remember that as you are figuring out your budget and how much you want to spend when you are buying
[00:07:47] [SPEAKER_00]: a piece. Alright so reason number five for when to have jewelry appraised, this could be before
[00:07:57] [SPEAKER_00]: an auction or a special sale. Alright so if you're planning to sell some high end
[00:08:02] [SPEAKER_00]: jewelry pieces through an auction or a consignment shop or sale or maybe in a specialized jewelry
[00:08:09] [SPEAKER_00]: store, an appraisal will a lot of times be a prerequisite in order to sell your piece in
[00:08:18] [SPEAKER_00]: those places. Not always but sometimes again depending on you know the auction house or
[00:08:24] [SPEAKER_00]: depending on you know where you're selling it. So you may want to have that done ahead of time
[00:08:30] [SPEAKER_00]: if you are considering selling a high end piece. Alright so an appraisal is often a prerequisite
[00:08:38] [SPEAKER_00]: like I said auction houses typically require an appraisal to confirm the pieces authenticity
[00:08:44] [SPEAKER_00]: and to set an accurate reserve price. Now some auction houses do have their own
[00:08:51] [SPEAKER_00]: in or on staff appraisers who will appraise jewelry for you for an additional fee
[00:08:58] [SPEAKER_00]: but not all of them do so this is something that you may want to consider before putting your piece
[00:09:05] [SPEAKER_00]: up for sale. Alright and my last reason for when to have jewelry appraised is
[00:09:14] [SPEAKER_00]: when you are revaluing jewelry. Alright so when you have a piece and you kind of know
[00:09:22] [SPEAKER_00]: what its value or worth could be but maybe it's been a few years, maybe things have changed
[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_00]: as it relates to you know the price of certain metals, you may need to revalue that piece at
[00:09:34] [SPEAKER_00]: some point in time. Alright jewelry markets do fluctuate especially for precious metals like
[00:09:40] [SPEAKER_00]: gold and platinum as well as gemstones such as diamonds. If you've been holding on to a piece
[00:09:46] [SPEAKER_00]: for a while it might be time to get it reappraised as its value may have increased due to
[00:09:53] [SPEAKER_00]: certain market conditions. Alright now this is something that I think a lot of us probably
[00:09:59] [SPEAKER_00]: wouldn't know off the top of our heads alright so always keep this in mind that you may have to
[00:10:05] [SPEAKER_00]: revalue a piece after a certain number of years you know maybe it has increased in value maybe
[00:10:12] [SPEAKER_00]: it has decreased but again you won't know until you have a professional take a look at it.
[00:10:18] [SPEAKER_00]: Alright so now we're going to move into why jewelry should be appraised. Alright so we've covered
[00:10:25] [SPEAKER_00]: when we think an appraisal would make sense now we want to talk about why we want to consider
[00:10:32] [SPEAKER_00]: jewelry appraisals. Alright so reason number one is accurate pricing I think this is probably
[00:10:38] [SPEAKER_00]: the most important reason because we don't want to undersell something you know and miss out
[00:10:45] [SPEAKER_00]: on hundreds or thousands or tens of thousands of dollars depending on what it is. Alright one
[00:10:51] [SPEAKER_00]: of the most important reasons for appraising jewelry is to establish its current market value.
[00:10:57] [SPEAKER_00]: Resellers rely on this information to set competitive and accurate prices
[00:11:02] [SPEAKER_00]: preventing undervaluing or overpricing. Accurate pricing can build credibility with
[00:11:08] [SPEAKER_00]: buyers and encourage faster sales. Alright so we always want to try and be as accurate as possible
[00:11:15] [SPEAKER_00]: when we are pricing our jewelry. Alright reason number two as to why jewelry should be appraised
[00:11:23] [SPEAKER_00]: and that is for building trust with your buyers offering an appraisal certificate with the jewelry
[00:11:31] [SPEAKER_00]: you're selling provides buyers with peace of mind it assures them that the piece has been
[00:11:36] [SPEAKER_00]: professionally evaluated and they're getting a fair deal based on the value and the quality
[00:11:44] [SPEAKER_00]: and in some cases the condition of the item. Alright so it's always good to be as transparent
[00:11:52] [SPEAKER_00]: and communicate with your buyer as much information as you possibly can. So this is really really
[00:11:58] [SPEAKER_00]: good because you want to be able to communicate with your buyer and have the confidence to say
[00:12:04] [SPEAKER_00]: I am selling what I claim I am selling and there's not going to be any guessing or trying to figure
[00:12:10] [SPEAKER_00]: out what sounds good or what looks good you know and that really helps to solidify the relationship
[00:12:16] [SPEAKER_00]: with your buyer as well because when they know they can trust you they definitely will come back
[00:12:21] [SPEAKER_00]: to buy more. Alright so reason number three as to why jewelry should be appraised and this
[00:12:29] [SPEAKER_00]: is like we talked about earlier to verify the quality and the materials an appraisal evaluates
[00:12:37] [SPEAKER_00]: the quality of the materials used in the jewelry this includes checking the purity of gold or platinum
[00:12:43] [SPEAKER_00]: the clarity and cut of certain gemstones and the presence of any enhancements or treatments
[00:12:50] [SPEAKER_00]: kind of like what we talked about earlier knowing the exact quality helps resellers
[00:12:56] [SPEAKER_00]: better describe the piece and justify the asking price. Alright so we know again we don't want to
[00:13:05] [SPEAKER_00]: guess on what we may have we want to know for certain that this piece is gold or these are real
[00:13:14] [SPEAKER_00]: diamonds or whatever you know whatever the case is as it relates to your jewelry.
[00:13:20] [SPEAKER_00]: Alright reason number four as to why jewelry should be appraised and this is for legal and
[00:13:26] [SPEAKER_00]: tax purposes appraisals can be essential for legal or tax situations especially when dealing with
[00:13:33] [SPEAKER_00]: estate jewelry or inherited jewelry items a professional appraisal can be used to settle
[00:13:41] [SPEAKER_00]: estates determine certain tax liabilities or to divide assets among heirs. Alright so sometimes
[00:13:51] [SPEAKER_00]: in order to deal with certain legal situations or circumstances a professional jewelry appraisal
[00:13:59] [SPEAKER_00]: will be required so things can be taken care of in a fair and I guess efficient manner. Alright so
[00:14:07] [SPEAKER_00]: think about that too especially if you are inheriting jewelry pieces that could be worth a lot
[00:14:12] [SPEAKER_00]: of money. Alright and reason number five as to why jewelry should be appraised we talked
[00:14:19] [SPEAKER_00]: about this earlier setting appropriate insurance coverage we want to know exactly how much insurance
[00:14:26] [SPEAKER_00]: we need to buy if we are going to ensure our jewelry pieces jewelry appraisals are necessary for
[00:14:33] [SPEAKER_00]: setting insurance coverages especially if you deal with high value pieces regularly. Alright this
[00:14:39] [SPEAKER_00]: ensures that in the event of theft loss or damage you or the buyer can recover the full value
[00:14:45] [SPEAKER_00]: of the item. Alright so that's really good that will give you peace of mind okay and then you'll
[00:14:51] [SPEAKER_00]: know if anything happens to this piece you know you're protected and the jewelry piece is covered.
[00:15:00] [SPEAKER_00]: Alright so we talked about the reasons when to have jewelry appraised and then we also
[00:15:08] [SPEAKER_00]: talked about the reasons why to have jewelry appraised so now that we understand the reasons
[00:15:16] [SPEAKER_00]: when and why to get our jewelry appraised how do you find a reliable appraiser how do you know
[00:15:25] [SPEAKER_00]: where to take your jewelry to well I want to talk about that next because I have been asked if I
[00:15:32] [SPEAKER_00]: have any jewelry appraisers that I recommend or refer people to and right now at this time I don't
[00:15:40] [SPEAKER_00]: however I probably should at least find one that I trust and that I could work with just in case I
[00:15:47] [SPEAKER_00]: do need one you know sometimes you you like to have certain people that you can contact
[00:15:54] [SPEAKER_00]: before you need them and so you're already set up so when you do need somebody then you
[00:16:01] [SPEAKER_00]: have somebody that you can reach out to. Alright so let's talk about how resellers can find
[00:16:08] [SPEAKER_00]: reliable appraisers alright so number one the thing that you want to look out for is
[00:16:15] [SPEAKER_00]: certified appraisers alright so look for certified jewelry appraisers who have qualifications from
[00:16:22] [SPEAKER_00]: respected organizations like the Gemological Institute of America also known as GIA,
[00:16:29] [SPEAKER_00]: International Society of Appraisers, ISA and the or or the American Society of Appraisers ASA
[00:16:39] [SPEAKER_00]: these appraisers have been trained to accurately evaluate jewelry and gemstones based on certain
[00:16:46] [SPEAKER_00]: industry standards. Alright next up we want to think about jewelry associations many industry
[00:16:54] [SPEAKER_00]: associations such as the National Association of Jewelry Appraisers also known as NHA,
[00:17:01] [SPEAKER_00]: offer directories of certified appraisers these organizations often provide continuing education
[00:17:08] [SPEAKER_00]: to ensure appraisers are up-to-date on market trends and valuation techniques. So if you are
[00:17:14] [SPEAKER_00]: listening to the audio version of this podcast I will have links to all of these organizations
[00:17:22] [SPEAKER_00]: on the website under I'll create a blog post that way you can access this you know in case
[00:17:27] [SPEAKER_00]: you know you can't write anything down right now and if you are watching the video version of
[00:17:32] [SPEAKER_00]: this podcast I will have a blog post linked in the description so you can access this list
[00:17:39] [SPEAKER_00]: in case you are looking for an appraiser right now. Alright moving on as it relates to
[00:17:47] [SPEAKER_00]: how resellers can find reliable appraisers tip number three is to visit your local jewelry stores
[00:17:54] [SPEAKER_00]: or maybe your local auction house if you have one in your area high-end or reputable jewelry stores
[00:18:02] [SPEAKER_00]: often have certified appraisers on staff these professionals can evaluate jewelry for a fee
[00:18:08] [SPEAKER_00]: and their familiarity with the local market can give you insight into pricing trends which I
[00:18:15] [SPEAKER_00]: think is a good bonus auction houses may also offer appraisal services especially for rare or antique
[00:18:22] [SPEAKER_00]: items alright and usually there is an additional fee for that so you always want to check up front
[00:18:29] [SPEAKER_00]: to make sure you know what those fees are. Now here is another tip and this is becoming
[00:18:36] [SPEAKER_00]: more and more popular as a lot of us do pretty much all of our business online and that is
[00:18:42] [SPEAKER_00]: online appraisal services alright so while in-person appraisals are generally preferred some reputable
[00:18:49] [SPEAKER_00]: online appraisal services do exist where you can send detailed photographs or the actual piece
[00:18:56] [SPEAKER_00]: however these should be used with caution as the appraiser cannot physically handle the piece
[00:19:02] [SPEAKER_00]: to check for certain factors like weight balance or hallmarks alright so a lot of times I've
[00:19:10] [SPEAKER_00]: seen people talk about this especially in some of the jewelry Facebook groups that you can send in
[00:19:15] [SPEAKER_00]: photographs of the actual piece and someone can give you an appraisal by just looking at the
[00:19:22] [SPEAKER_00]: photographs although I don't know if that would be a preferred way but I guess in a pinch you
[00:19:29] [SPEAKER_00]: could do that you know it's definitely an option. I would be very leery of sending a piece to
[00:19:35] [SPEAKER_00]: get appraised because I would just be so nervous either about the piece getting damaged or lost in
[00:19:41] [SPEAKER_00]: transit or anything right so I think if I were to get a jewelry piece appraised I would look for
[00:19:48] [SPEAKER_00]: somebody local so I could get it done in person and so I wouldn't have to worry about anything
[00:19:54] [SPEAKER_00]: you know as it relates to the piece you know getting there being sent back alright so
[00:20:01] [SPEAKER_00]: tip number five as it relates to finding a reputable appraiser you can always contact GIA
[00:20:09] [SPEAKER_00]: graduated gemologist a GIA and remember this is the gemological institute of America I think
[00:20:22] [SPEAKER_00]: GIA hold on let me yes gemological institute of America alright GIA graduated gemologist
[00:20:31] [SPEAKER_00]: a GIA graduated gemologist is highly qualified to assess the authenticity and value of gemstones
[00:20:38] [SPEAKER_00]: they can identify characteristics such as cut clarity color and carrot weight helping resellers
[00:20:45] [SPEAKER_00]: accurately describe and price gemstone jewelry all right so you can probably just go on to the
[00:20:52] [SPEAKER_00]: website and you can find a GIA graduated gemologist to help you figure out exactly what you have as
[00:21:01] [SPEAKER_00]: it relates to your jewelry all right tip number six is word of mouth and referrals so ask around
[00:21:09] [SPEAKER_00]: and even if you may not know anybody like in your you know real life I have seen people ask for
[00:21:17] [SPEAKER_00]: jewelry appraiser referrals in some of the jewelry Facebook groups now of course you're going to have
[00:21:24] [SPEAKER_00]: to you know do your due diligence with that but that's definitely an option as well you know you
[00:21:30] [SPEAKER_00]: can ask fellow resellers especially those who specialize in jewelry for recommendations word
[00:21:36] [SPEAKER_00]: of mouth sometimes is the best way to find reliable appraisers who are knowledgeable and
[00:21:41] [SPEAKER_00]: trustworthy because someone may have experience with that particular appraiser all right and finally
[00:21:49] [SPEAKER_00]: you want to request detailed documentation when choosing an appraiser ensure they provide a detailed
[00:21:57] [SPEAKER_00]: appraisal report this should include information on the metal type gemstone quality weight design
[00:22:06] [SPEAKER_00]: and overall condition of the jewelry the report should be comprehensive and useful for both
[00:22:13] [SPEAKER_00]: reselling and insurance purposes all right so you want to make sure that someone goes over your piece
[00:22:22] [SPEAKER_00]: as specifically and as detailed as possible because you want everything to be noted and
[00:22:28] [SPEAKER_00]: documented because then you will have a clear official document that you can use as it relates
[00:22:37] [SPEAKER_00]: to selling and as it relates to insurance and and tax reasons like we discussed earlier all right so
[00:22:43] [SPEAKER_00]: make sure you request that you don't want to just have someone tell you yeah it's worth this
[00:22:49] [SPEAKER_00]: amount of money without the paperwork to back it up and you always want to make sure you hold
[00:22:54] [SPEAKER_00]: on to that for as long as you own that piece all right so we have talked about a lot today as it
[00:23:01] [SPEAKER_00]: relates to appraising jewelry in general for most of us as resellers we probably won't be doing a lot
[00:23:10] [SPEAKER_00]: of this but there are some of us who do specialize in the higher end pieces and so I wanted to do
[00:23:16] [SPEAKER_00]: this episode just to give you an idea or just some information as a starting point for you
[00:23:23] [SPEAKER_00]: if you're considering if whether or not you should get a piece appraised you know because sometimes
[00:23:31] [SPEAKER_00]: you might think you have something and then you don't or you might think you don't have
