[00:00:54] [SPEAKER_01]: Alright, hello and welcome back to another episode of the Jewelry Resellers Podcast.

[00:01:00] [SPEAKER_01]: I have a very special guest, Lauri.

[00:01:02] [SPEAKER_01]: I am so thrilled that you are here.

[00:01:05] [SPEAKER_01]: So welcome to the podcast.

[00:01:07] [SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.

[00:01:08] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm so glad you invited me.

[00:01:10] [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, yes.

[00:01:11] [SPEAKER_01]: So I guess maybe we should start with you introducing yourself and then we can even

[00:01:16] [SPEAKER_01]: talk about how we met and how this all came about and all the pretty stuff that

[00:01:22] [SPEAKER_01]: we're going to be focusing on in a bit.

[00:01:24] [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely.

[00:01:26] [SPEAKER_03]: So I'm Lauri London.

[00:01:28] [SPEAKER_03]: My online stores are my easy, the letter E and the letter Z, my easy vintage.

[00:01:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Then I have a brick and mortar store in Seminole, Florida and I've been in retail

[00:01:41] [SPEAKER_03]: for 47 years.

[00:01:43] [SPEAKER_03]: So I've been doing retail for a while.

[00:01:47] Yes.

[00:01:48] [SPEAKER_01]: And you've kind of done all aspects of retail, correct?

[00:01:52] [SPEAKER_01]: But now you've kind of moved into the jewelry and vintage space.

[00:01:58] [SPEAKER_01]: Yep.

[00:01:58] [SPEAKER_03]: I always did clothing and accessories.

[00:02:02] [SPEAKER_03]: I've been doing it since the late 70s.

[00:02:06] [SPEAKER_03]: So the jewelry kind of is my passion and it's the kind of thing later in life that

[00:02:13] [SPEAKER_03]: you could commit yourself to because earlier, you know, earlier you're really

[00:02:17] [SPEAKER_03]: moving and shaking.

[00:02:18] [SPEAKER_03]: And now I get to play with jewelry all day.

[00:02:20] [SPEAKER_03]: Do what I love.

[00:02:22] [SPEAKER_01]: Yes.

[00:02:23] [SPEAKER_01]: And that's why I'm so glad that we finally met even though we only met online.

[00:02:28] [SPEAKER_01]: But we connected through our mutual friend, CJ, Jimmy, also known as the

[00:02:36] [SPEAKER_01]: costume jeweler.

[00:02:37] [SPEAKER_01]: And he came out here to Las Vegas and he told me all about Lori and he said, oh

[00:02:43] [SPEAKER_01]: my gosh, you need to have a conversation with her because she knows so much about

[00:02:47] [SPEAKER_01]: jewelry.

[00:02:48] [SPEAKER_01]: She knows so much about all the different brands, era styles.

[00:02:53] [SPEAKER_01]: And so that's how we met.

[00:02:55] [SPEAKER_01]: And I'm really, really, really glad that he connected us.

[00:02:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, and I always tell people I'm still learning.

[00:03:02] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm a student.

[00:03:03] [SPEAKER_03]: You can do this forever.

[00:03:04] [SPEAKER_03]: And there's just so much to know it's impossible.

[00:03:08] [SPEAKER_03]: It really is impossible to, you know, you could pick an area and try to be an

[00:03:12] [SPEAKER_03]: expert in that one small area.

[00:03:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Jewelery is just so intensive.

[00:03:18] [SPEAKER_03]: There's so much to it.

[00:03:19] [SPEAKER_03]: And now, you know, they actually are 3d printing vintage jewelry.

[00:03:26] [SPEAKER_03]: So really market is flooded with fakes.

[00:03:29] [SPEAKER_03]: So it's like 280,000 for the machine.

[00:03:34] [SPEAKER_03]: But what they've done is they bought the original and original and then

[00:03:38] [SPEAKER_03]: they're 3d printing them and they are selling them online as originals.

[00:03:43] [SPEAKER_03]: And you really don't know whether it is or it's not till you get it in your

[00:03:48] [SPEAKER_03]: hand.

[00:03:49] [SPEAKER_03]: And then unless you're comparing two pieces, it's even hard to tell because

[00:03:53] [SPEAKER_03]: they've done such a good job at what they're doing.

[00:03:58] [SPEAKER_03]: But, you know, it's just like fake Louis Vuitton, fake Gucci, you know, they see

[00:04:03] [SPEAKER_03]: that costume jewelry, the vintage market has exploded.

[00:04:07] [SPEAKER_03]: And the reason it's exploded is because vintage costume jewelry is limited.

[00:04:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Unlike the do today, which is unlimited, you know, if there's a designer

[00:04:18] [SPEAKER_03]: you love and they only did, you know, 100 or 200 pieces.

[00:04:25] [SPEAKER_03]: It's so limited that that's what makes those prices just so crazy high.

[00:04:32] [SPEAKER_03]: You know, you have great brands that did mass production and they're still

[00:04:37] [SPEAKER_03]: great.

[00:04:38] [SPEAKER_03]: But, you know, earlier pieces are amazing and, you know, people laugh, but

[00:04:44] [SPEAKER_03]: on the low end, the Avon, it's still a great piece.

[00:04:48] [SPEAKER_03]: I'll look at Avon pieces that are 100 years old and they look amazing.

[00:04:52] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.

[00:04:53] [SPEAKER_03]: You know, it's the difference between the old costume jewelry before say,

[00:05:00] [SPEAKER_03]: and I'm just throwing a number out.

[00:05:02] [SPEAKER_03]: So if you guys realize I'm not correct, I understand.

[00:05:05] [SPEAKER_03]: But like early 60s, the difference between the gold filled and the gold plating

[00:05:10] [SPEAKER_03]: then is like 25 times what they have to put in it now.

[00:05:13] [SPEAKER_03]: They could get away with putting so little in before for something to be

[00:05:18] [SPEAKER_03]: gold filled.

[00:05:19] [SPEAKER_03]: It had to be one 20th at the least.

[00:05:21] [SPEAKER_03]: So one 20th of that project had to be real gold to make it where they get

[00:05:27] [SPEAKER_03]: gold filled.

[00:05:28] [SPEAKER_03]: But even the gold plating, they used to plate it so much thicker than

[00:05:33] [SPEAKER_03]: they're doing now that now, even though it's gold electroplated,

[00:05:38] [SPEAKER_03]: it's such a thin plating that if you scratch it, hit it, nick it,

[00:05:43] [SPEAKER_03]: it's going to deteriorate and the plating will start coming off.

[00:05:49] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it flakes off.

[00:05:51] [SPEAKER_03]: I've seen that.

[00:05:51] [SPEAKER_03]: The older stuff, if you scratched it, it was so thick.

[00:05:55] [SPEAKER_03]: You know, it was like 15 times thicker than what they're doing today.

[00:05:58] [SPEAKER_03]: If you scratched it on your desk, you just took a buffer and you cleaned

[00:06:02] [SPEAKER_03]: it a little bit, but you never got through the plating today.

[00:06:05] [SPEAKER_03]: It's so easy to get through the plating on pieces.

[00:06:09] [SPEAKER_03]: So, you know, that's what makes vintage special in my opinion is

[00:06:16] [SPEAKER_03]: the way it was created, the handcrafted, even, you know, the hand assembling

[00:06:21] [SPEAKER_03]: you.

[00:06:22] [SPEAKER_03]: You know, there was a lot of machine-made stuff, but they were still hand assembled,

[00:06:26] [SPEAKER_03]: whether they were machine stamped, you know, or not.

[00:06:31] [SPEAKER_03]: They were somebody sitting there a job or putting the piece together,

[00:06:36] [SPEAKER_03]: putting the rhinestone in the setting, which makes the difference

[00:06:39] [SPEAKER_03]: between handset and glue set.

[00:06:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, OK.

[00:06:44] [SPEAKER_01]: Wow.

[00:06:45] [SPEAKER_01]: See, I've already learned a ton.

[00:06:47] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, my God.

[00:06:48] [SPEAKER_01]: We've only been talking for five minutes.

[00:06:50] [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, I should shut up now.

[00:06:51] [SPEAKER_01]: No, no, no, please don't.

[00:06:53] [SPEAKER_01]: Please don't.

[00:06:55] [SPEAKER_01]: All right.

[00:06:55] [SPEAKER_01]: So, I mean, because I didn't even know where to start as it relates to,

[00:07:00] [SPEAKER_01]: you know, everything that we both love about jewelry and things

[00:07:04] [SPEAKER_01]: that we're still learning about jewelry.

[00:07:06] [SPEAKER_01]: Do you have a, because a lot of people who are watching the podcast,

[00:07:11] [SPEAKER_01]: like they're just getting started in vintage jewelry and reselling

[00:07:16] [SPEAKER_01]: vintage jewelry.

[00:07:17] [SPEAKER_01]: So if someone is just starting this, what are some tips or how can you

[00:07:22] [SPEAKER_01]: guide them so they don't get so overwhelmed?

[00:07:25] [SPEAKER_01]: OK.

[00:07:25] [SPEAKER_03]: So we'll talk more to the novice collector.

[00:07:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Somebody who is thinking about starting a collection or getting

[00:07:33] [SPEAKER_03]: involved in costume jewelry.

[00:07:34] [SPEAKER_03]: So the first thing I would say is to either pick a designer that you

[00:07:43] [SPEAKER_03]: really like or a style that you really like.

[00:07:48] [SPEAKER_03]: Get really broad because get involved in what you're doing,

[00:07:55] [SPEAKER_03]: like researching it, understanding it, understanding the designer.

[00:07:59] [SPEAKER_03]: So if you say you like Renaissance or Art Deco, you know,

[00:08:07] [SPEAKER_03]: start your Deco collection.

[00:08:09] [SPEAKER_03]: And I will tell you that when you're just starting out,

[00:08:12] [SPEAKER_03]: you buy what you love.

[00:08:14] [SPEAKER_03]: OK.

[00:08:14] [SPEAKER_03]: You look at a piece and you love it and you buy it because

[00:08:17] [SPEAKER_03]: you're really not thinking about the quality or the designer or

[00:08:22] [SPEAKER_03]: whatever if you're in first style and your taste will change.

[00:08:25] [SPEAKER_03]: This is the whole thing.

[00:08:26] [SPEAKER_03]: It's kind of like drinking wine.

[00:08:28] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know if you remember when you first started with wine,

[00:08:30] [SPEAKER_03]: everybody starts with a sweeter wine, a white wine.

[00:08:34] [SPEAKER_03]: You know, it takes years to progress to where you hate sweet wines.

[00:08:38] [SPEAKER_03]: You don't like white wine.

[00:08:39] [SPEAKER_03]: You're going for the deeper darker.

[00:08:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Same with jewelry.

[00:08:42] [SPEAKER_03]: Like sometimes I'll pull out a box that I put away in just five

[00:08:46] [SPEAKER_03]: years, five years ago.

[00:08:48] [SPEAKER_03]: And I'll be like, oh my God, why do I think this was special?

[00:08:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Why did I put this in this box?

[00:08:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes.

[00:08:54] [SPEAKER_03]: There's later, and I'm thinking, OK, come on, Lori,

[00:08:57] [SPEAKER_03]: what were you really thinking?

[00:08:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Why is this here?

[00:09:00] [SPEAKER_03]: So your taste will change.

[00:09:03] [SPEAKER_03]: You'll elevate what you start with.

[00:09:06] [SPEAKER_03]: So say you start with the Sterling, Art Deco, crystal and cut

[00:09:12] [SPEAKER_03]: glass or black glass, handset.

[00:09:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Then down the road, you're going to want to turn that into

[00:09:20] [SPEAKER_03]: a quartz crystal and black onyx.

[00:09:25] [SPEAKER_03]: And you're going to want more advanced pieces.

[00:09:29] [SPEAKER_03]: But start with your basics and then build from there.

[00:09:33] [SPEAKER_03]: You know, don't jump in and buy a super expensive piece.

[00:09:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Think about how you want to collect it because you want to

[00:09:39] [SPEAKER_03]: live with it, love it, know you're going to wear it.

[00:09:42] [SPEAKER_03]: The other thing I would say is always try to get something

[00:09:44] [SPEAKER_03]: you really can wear because spend money on a piece that

[00:09:49] [SPEAKER_03]: you can't enjoy.

[00:09:50] [SPEAKER_03]: It becomes art.

[00:09:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Wrong.

[00:09:53] [SPEAKER_03]: I have a lot of art.

[00:09:57] [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, well, you know when I remember years ago when I was

[00:10:02] [SPEAKER_01]: first getting into jewelry and this was probably right after

[00:10:05] [SPEAKER_01]: high school, I would always buy pieces to match an outfit.

[00:10:10] [SPEAKER_01]: And so I would buy a piece to match the outfit.

[00:10:13] [SPEAKER_01]: But then I wasn't sure if I could wear it if I wasn't

[00:10:16] [SPEAKER_01]: wearing the outfit, right?

[00:10:18] [SPEAKER_01]: So figuring out your style like you said, so you're not

[00:10:21] [SPEAKER_01]: limited in how you wear it or when you wear it.

[00:10:25] [SPEAKER_03]: And then the other thing to ask yourself is, so everybody

[00:10:28] [SPEAKER_03]: has an idea if you like silver or you like gold.

[00:10:32] [SPEAKER_03]: I mix silver and gold.

[00:10:36] [SPEAKER_03]: I always have.

[00:10:38] [SPEAKER_03]: So I'll pick up pieces.

[00:10:39] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that's trendy now they say.

[00:10:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, I'll pick up pieces that are two tone, that

[00:10:45] [SPEAKER_03]: have this silver and the gold.

[00:10:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, lovely.

[00:10:48] [SPEAKER_03]: Silver with the 18 karat.

[00:10:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Beautiful.

[00:10:52] [SPEAKER_03]: But just so you can wear it.

[00:10:55] [SPEAKER_03]: So pigeon hold if you're only wearing silver and then you

[00:10:59] [SPEAKER_03]: get a shirt that has gold accents or shoes, you're

[00:11:03] [SPEAKER_03]: going to want to do both.

[00:11:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Some people build both a silver and a gold set and

[00:11:08] [SPEAKER_03]: then they'll introduce solid colors.

[00:11:11] [SPEAKER_03]: So say like your top today, you're very, you know,

[00:11:14] [SPEAKER_03]: your colors are bright and vibrant and multi colored.

[00:11:20] [SPEAKER_03]: Me as well, you know, I always wear jeans.

[00:11:24] [SPEAKER_03]: It's one thing I always do working.

[00:11:26] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm up and down the stairs.

[00:11:26] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm carrying my bird.

[00:11:28] [SPEAKER_03]: I always am covered in jewelry.

[00:11:29] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm on the floor.

[00:11:30] [SPEAKER_03]: So usually a blue Jean and a top, but instead of getting

[00:11:35] [SPEAKER_03]: something in the pink that you may not have pink

[00:11:39] [SPEAKER_03]: in all your tops, go with the more the black that

[00:11:43] [SPEAKER_03]: you can incorporate into a lot of the outfits you wear.

[00:11:46] [SPEAKER_03]: And then you'll see what colors, you know,

[00:11:49] [SPEAKER_03]: what do you really enjoy wearing because it's so personal.

[00:11:55] [SPEAKER_03]: That's what I hear you sweet girl.

[00:11:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Jewelry is personal.

[00:11:59] [SPEAKER_03]: It speaks to you.

[00:12:01] [SPEAKER_03]: I always tell people don't buy to buy.

[00:12:03] [SPEAKER_03]: You know, you hear this brand is hot.

[00:12:05] [SPEAKER_03]: You're going to run out and go buy a Louis Vuitton.

[00:12:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, does Louis Vuitton really speak to you?

[00:12:09] [SPEAKER_03]: You know, there may be another brand that you're

[00:12:13] [SPEAKER_03]: just not thinking about.

[00:12:16] [SPEAKER_03]: So we, you know, jewelry is an emotional purchase.

[00:12:19] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, I've known a lot of women who have gotten a piece

[00:12:21] [SPEAKER_03]: of jewelry that they hated and, you know,

[00:12:24] [SPEAKER_03]: from their significant other and thought,

[00:12:27] [SPEAKER_03]: right, doesn't know me at all.

[00:12:30] [SPEAKER_03]: So, you know, learn yourself through the jewelry explore.

[00:12:34] [SPEAKER_03]: And it's another way you could take risks.

[00:12:37] [SPEAKER_03]: You could be a little bit more risky in your jewelry than

[00:12:42] [SPEAKER_03]: you may be in your dress.

[00:12:45] [SPEAKER_03]: So, right, you know, you branch out a bit and then the

[00:12:50] [SPEAKER_03]: date of the night is really big.

[00:12:52] [SPEAKER_03]: You don't want to buy something you can only wear at night.

[00:12:55] [SPEAKER_03]: You want to be able to wear it day night.

[00:12:59] [SPEAKER_03]: That's funny because they made a lot of reversible jewelry

[00:13:02] [SPEAKER_03]: and especially in the power dressing 90s that you could

[00:13:07] [SPEAKER_03]: flip it over and at night it would be very flashy.

[00:13:11] [SPEAKER_03]: But with your business out that it would be, you know,

[00:13:14] [SPEAKER_03]: solid so that it was.

[00:13:16] [SPEAKER_01]: Yes.

[00:13:17] [SPEAKER_01]: And I remember those summit remember some jewelry.

[00:13:19] [SPEAKER_01]: They would have interchangeable pieces and you'd be able to

[00:13:22] [SPEAKER_01]: like put something on it or take it off or change the face of

[00:13:27] [SPEAKER_01]: like watches and stuff to different colors.

[00:13:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Because I just put two sets online yesterday.

[00:13:35] [SPEAKER_03]: That came with jackets in every color.

[00:13:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, really?

[00:13:40] [SPEAKER_03]: And then you can change it every day for whatever.

[00:13:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes.

[00:13:44] [SPEAKER_01]: I've seen those.

[00:13:45] [SPEAKER_01]: I've seen those.

[00:13:46] [SPEAKER_01]: And those are.

[00:13:48] [SPEAKER_01]: Now what would you say?

[00:13:50] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay.

[00:13:50] [SPEAKER_01]: So that's like for personal use.

[00:13:54] [SPEAKER_01]: But now we also have people who are who are also starting

[00:13:58] [SPEAKER_01]: or trying to grow as jewelry resellers or started jewelry

[00:14:02] [SPEAKER_01]: consignment business started jewelry reselling business.

[00:14:06] [SPEAKER_01]: So how would you approach that as someone who wants to sell

[00:14:13] [SPEAKER_01]: the jewelry and not necessarily wear it or collect it?

[00:14:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay.

[00:14:17] [SPEAKER_03]: So that's going to be somebody who is only looking for things

[00:14:22] [SPEAKER_03]: that they can make money on.

[00:14:23] [SPEAKER_03]: So I'm out.

[00:14:25] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't get out that much.

[00:14:27] [SPEAKER_03]: I work six days a week.

[00:14:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Usually, you know, and on Sundays a lot of the places here

[00:14:32] [SPEAKER_03]: are an open but I'll go picking a little bit.

[00:14:34] [SPEAKER_03]: I have a lot of people who come to me who bring that.

[00:14:37] [SPEAKER_03]: I buy bulk and the first thing I always, first of all,

[00:14:41] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm always honest if I walk in a store,

[00:14:43] [SPEAKER_03]: I have people who come in my store all the time and they're

[00:14:46] [SPEAKER_03]: resellers and I recognize them and I'll, oh, are you a

[00:14:50] [SPEAKER_03]: reseller?

[00:14:50] [SPEAKER_03]: And they'll lie.

[00:14:52] [SPEAKER_03]: Literally, they'll say, Oh no, I'm just buying it for me

[00:14:55] [SPEAKER_03]: and they'll pick out 10 pieces and at the end of the sale

[00:14:59] [SPEAKER_03]: I'll look at them and I'll say, you know,

[00:15:01] [SPEAKER_03]: it's really a pity you weren't a reseller because I

[00:15:03] [SPEAKER_03]: always do better for my resellers.

[00:15:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Back if they're hunting in your playground,

[00:15:10] [SPEAKER_03]: right?

[00:15:11] [SPEAKER_03]: For deals that they could resell.

[00:15:13] [SPEAKER_03]: So I have a room in my store.

[00:15:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Everything in that room is $5.

[00:15:17] [SPEAKER_03]: So if it's 20 or less, I throw it in the $5 room.

[00:15:21] [SPEAKER_03]: I do that because it doesn't pay for me to pay

[00:15:24] [SPEAKER_03]: somebody to list it, put it online,

[00:15:26] [SPEAKER_03]: pay the percentage I pay, pay the taxes I pay

[00:15:29] [SPEAKER_03]: at something under $20.

[00:15:31] [SPEAKER_03]: So we just, so I have a lot of pickers who come in

[00:15:34] [SPEAKER_03]: who are always looking for, you know,

[00:15:36] [SPEAKER_03]: because they're a reseller that if they pay 5

[00:15:39] [SPEAKER_03]: and sell it for 20, they're happy.

[00:15:40] [SPEAKER_03]: They make three times what they invested.

[00:15:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Right, right.

[00:15:44] [SPEAKER_03]: What I say if you're a reseller is there's two

[00:15:50] [SPEAKER_03]: things.

[00:15:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Don't only buy what you like because I've seen

[00:15:55] [SPEAKER_03]: resellers that pigeonhole themselves.

[00:15:58] [SPEAKER_03]: And I host sell to them, but they'll tell me,

[00:16:01] [SPEAKER_03]: oh, I only buy what I like.

[00:16:02] [SPEAKER_03]: If I don't like it, I don't buy it.

[00:16:04] [SPEAKER_03]: And I think, okay, so everybody's not going to

[00:16:07] [SPEAKER_03]: have the same taste as you.

[00:16:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Right.

[00:16:09] [SPEAKER_03]: But my store, I buy a lot of stuff I don't like.

[00:16:12] [SPEAKER_03]: And it's not even that I don't like it.

[00:16:15] [SPEAKER_03]: I buy a lot of stuff that isn't something I would

[00:16:18] [SPEAKER_03]: ever wear because it's not my style.

[00:16:22] [SPEAKER_03]: But I understand that if you're a reseller,

[00:16:25] [SPEAKER_03]: you've got to have stuff for everybody.

[00:16:28] [SPEAKER_03]: The next thing I will tell you about being a jewelry

[00:16:30] [SPEAKER_03]: reseller is unlike being a clothing reseller,

[00:16:36] [SPEAKER_03]: you don't always have to worry about size.

[00:16:39] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.

[00:16:40] [SPEAKER_03]: That's, and as my husband says, he loves that I

[00:16:44] [SPEAKER_03]: like smalls because it's easy to stick a bag of

[00:16:46] [SPEAKER_03]: jewelry in your purse.

[00:16:48] [SPEAKER_03]: You know, I have 20 pairs of jeans in my purse

[00:16:50] [SPEAKER_03]: show up at a party and be like, oh, I have this.

[00:16:53] [SPEAKER_01]: And it's easy to ship and it's easy to store.

[00:16:56] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, you don't need a whole lot of space,

[00:16:58] [SPEAKER_01]: even though I've seen your space.

[00:17:00] [SPEAKER_01]: You do have a lot of space for most of us,

[00:17:04] [SPEAKER_01]: we can store it in a spare bedroom or in a closet

[00:17:07] [SPEAKER_01]: or something like that.

[00:17:08] [SPEAKER_03]: The one thing I'll tell you to be careful of if

[00:17:10] [SPEAKER_03]: you are storing jewelry is I am a if you are

[00:17:17] [SPEAKER_03]: starting out or if you're a reseller or if

[00:17:19] [SPEAKER_03]: you're in the business, the number one thing

[00:17:21] [SPEAKER_03]: I would tell you would be to join Facebook groups

[00:17:24] [SPEAKER_03]: that are in the same philosophy or go with

[00:17:30] [SPEAKER_03]: what you're doing because the resource there

[00:17:32] [SPEAKER_03]: is unbelievable.

[00:17:33] [SPEAKER_01]: I agree.

[00:17:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Some of the groups that help identify makers

[00:17:37] [SPEAKER_03]: marks and identify jewelry styles.

[00:17:41] [SPEAKER_03]: So that's one thing.

[00:17:43] [SPEAKER_03]: The other thing I saw was I have seen

[00:17:48] [SPEAKER_03]: people get storages, put their jewelry in

[00:17:51] [SPEAKER_03]: storages, okay?

[00:17:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Air conditioned.

[00:17:56] [SPEAKER_03]: And that deteriorates the glue and the settings

[00:18:01] [SPEAKER_03]: and the vintage stuff.

[00:18:02] [SPEAKER_03]: Yesterday I dropped a belt and three of the plastic

[00:18:09] [SPEAKER_03]: medallions on the belt popped off.

[00:18:12] [SPEAKER_03]: And I didn't even drop it.

[00:18:13] [SPEAKER_03]: I dropped it on the soft floor,

[00:18:15] [SPEAKER_03]: but because the glue, you know, that's a good

[00:18:18] [SPEAKER_03]: indication to me that the glue is deteriorated

[00:18:21] [SPEAKER_03]: because of the change in temperatures.

[00:18:25] [SPEAKER_03]: You have to be conscious of that when you're a

[00:18:30] [SPEAKER_03]: reseller and storing.

[00:18:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Don't leave a tote of jewelry in your car

[00:18:35] [SPEAKER_03]: all day.

[00:18:36] [SPEAKER_03]: It's going to get up to 150 degrees in your

[00:18:38] [SPEAKER_03]: car.

[00:18:39] [SPEAKER_03]: So people don't think about this.

[00:18:41] [SPEAKER_03]: I used to go to the flea market and buy from

[00:18:43] [SPEAKER_03]: some of the girls years ago and I would get it

[00:18:47] [SPEAKER_03]: home and the stone would fall out or the cameo

[00:18:50] [SPEAKER_03]: would fall off.

[00:18:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I've had that happen too.

[00:18:52] [SPEAKER_03]: It's because they're storing it in their car.

[00:18:55] [SPEAKER_03]: The least little time you hit it, it's just

[00:18:58] [SPEAKER_03]: going to come apart.

[00:19:00] [SPEAKER_03]: The other thing is, you know, that's not a

[00:19:03] [SPEAKER_03]: problem if you have all the pieces.

[00:19:06] [SPEAKER_03]: It's when you lose a piece and it's a unique

[00:19:09] [SPEAKER_03]: type of stone or plastic and you don't have

[00:19:13] [SPEAKER_03]: a replacement.

[00:19:14] [SPEAKER_03]: So the other thing I would tell your listeners is

[00:19:18] [SPEAKER_03]: don't shy away from broken jewelry because I

[00:19:21] [SPEAKER_03]: keep what I call my doctor's kit.

[00:19:23] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know if you can see, but behind me, this

[00:19:27] [SPEAKER_03]: is where I fix jewelry and I keep my, I keep

[00:19:31] [SPEAKER_03]: extra stones.

[00:19:32] [SPEAKER_03]: I keep all my, you know, anything I might

[00:19:35] [SPEAKER_03]: need.

[00:19:36] [SPEAKER_03]: So I always tell people you're not going to

[00:19:39] [SPEAKER_03]: take a piece from 1910 and put in a rhinestone

[00:19:43] [SPEAKER_03]: from today.

[00:19:44] [SPEAKER_03]: You're going to mess up your piece.

[00:19:46] [SPEAKER_03]: You actually need to have a piece of jewelry

[00:19:49] [SPEAKER_03]: that you can substitute stones, rhinestones,

[00:19:53] [SPEAKER_03]: change out.

[00:19:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:19:56] [SPEAKER_03]: That's going to help you.

[00:19:57] [SPEAKER_03]: So if you have broken jewelry, make a

[00:20:00] [SPEAKER_03]: doctor's kit.

[00:20:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Don't, you know, don't take this stone out

[00:20:03] [SPEAKER_03]: of the setting until you need it because

[00:20:04] [SPEAKER_03]: it's so easy to lose them.

[00:20:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Do, you know, not realize what age is this piece.

[00:20:12] [SPEAKER_03]: So the setting is going to help you understand

[00:20:15] [SPEAKER_03]: the age of your pieces if you keep them with it.

[00:20:20] [SPEAKER_03]: So little things like that it took me years

[00:20:22] [SPEAKER_03]: to learn because if something broke, I thought

[00:20:25] [SPEAKER_03]: it was junk.

[00:20:25] [SPEAKER_03]: So throw it, not thinking, oh, you may want

[00:20:29] [SPEAKER_03]: that clip.

[00:20:30] [SPEAKER_03]: You may want the wire.

[00:20:31] [SPEAKER_03]: You may need that.

[00:20:34] [SPEAKER_03]: So just knowing that when you're starting out

[00:20:38] [SPEAKER_03]: that if you do have broken and now that's

[00:20:41] [SPEAKER_03]: not to say I don't sell like for crafting,

[00:20:43] [SPEAKER_03]: but I don't sell anything that I can't replace.

[00:20:48] [SPEAKER_03]: So, but if I have an early piece of

[00:20:51] [SPEAKER_03]: coro jewelry and it's missing, I keep it

[00:20:56] [SPEAKER_03]: so if I get the identical coro piece

[00:20:58] [SPEAKER_03]: and I end up needing something, I have

[00:21:00] [SPEAKER_03]: the replacement for it myself because if you

[00:21:03] [SPEAKER_03]: ever try to go hunting one small stone and

[00:21:07] [SPEAKER_03]: that's funny, CJ comes to me all the time

[00:21:09] [SPEAKER_03]: when he needs something because he knows

[00:21:11] [SPEAKER_03]: that I have a vast array of unique and

[00:21:14] [SPEAKER_03]: different stones.

[00:21:16] [SPEAKER_03]: So that's something people don't think

[00:21:18] [SPEAKER_03]: about but you should if you want to be in

[00:21:20] [SPEAKER_03]: this industry, you're going to need to

[00:21:23] [SPEAKER_03]: learn to repair your own pieces.

[00:21:26] [SPEAKER_03]: The one thing with costume jewelry is it

[00:21:28] [SPEAKER_03]: can never, there's not very many people

[00:21:31] [SPEAKER_03]: who can fix it anymore because you

[00:21:33] [SPEAKER_03]: solder it at a very, very low heat

[00:21:36] [SPEAKER_03]: temperature.

[00:21:38] [SPEAKER_03]: All the people that could fix costume

[00:21:39] [SPEAKER_03]: jewelry unfortunately I had a guy who

[00:21:42] [SPEAKER_03]: was amazing, he was 90 and his parents

[00:21:44] [SPEAKER_03]: owned a costume jewelry company when

[00:21:46] [SPEAKER_03]: he was growing up but now you know

[00:21:49] [SPEAKER_03]: there's not many people left who know

[00:21:50] [SPEAKER_03]: how to do it and then the rich won't

[00:21:53] [SPEAKER_03]: touch it because they know that as

[00:21:55] [SPEAKER_03]: soon as they hit it with their high heat

[00:21:58] [SPEAKER_03]: they're going to melt and ruin anything

[00:22:01] [SPEAKER_03]: around it.

[00:22:03] [SPEAKER_03]: So understand I mean I've lost some amazing

[00:22:06] [SPEAKER_03]: stuff because nobody can fix the piece

[00:22:11] [SPEAKER_03]: and you'll see a lot of people rework

[00:22:13] [SPEAKER_03]: pieces.

[00:22:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Right, I have seen that.

[00:22:17] [SPEAKER_03]: And they'll rework it into something,

[00:22:19] [SPEAKER_03]: they don't try to sell it as old but

[00:22:21] [SPEAKER_03]: they'll sell it as upcycled which is

[00:22:23] [SPEAKER_03]: yes.

[00:22:24] [SPEAKER_03]: I hate when people destroy costume jewelry

[00:22:27] [SPEAKER_03]: to make Christmas tree.

[00:22:29] [SPEAKER_03]: I hate that too you know and they

[00:22:32] [SPEAKER_01]: break off you know pieces, they break

[00:22:35] [SPEAKER_01]: off the back and you're like no.

[00:22:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Like I'm like no.

[00:22:41] [SPEAKER_03]: They're not understanding to people like

[00:22:43] [SPEAKER_03]: us who are so appreciative of the work

[00:22:46] [SPEAKER_03]: and the craftsmanship and what went

[00:22:49] [SPEAKER_03]: into it it's heartbreaking.

[00:22:51] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm not saying you shouldn't do it with

[00:22:53] [SPEAKER_03]: broken jewelry and I sell lots of broken

[00:22:56] [SPEAKER_03]: jewelry for crafters you know and there's

[00:23:00] [SPEAKER_03]: stuff in there but you know always in

[00:23:03] [SPEAKER_03]: if you're selling always think what is

[00:23:08] [SPEAKER_03]: it I may need to replace something.

[00:23:11] [SPEAKER_03]: Just keep, if you're selling just a

[00:23:14] [SPEAKER_03]: small amount of jewelry you could keep

[00:23:15] [SPEAKER_03]: the small boxers kit you know but if

[00:23:18] [SPEAKER_03]: you're like me and you have over five

[00:23:20] [SPEAKER_03]: million pieces believe me when I tell

[00:23:23] [SPEAKER_03]: you I have stuff I can't repair and I

[00:23:26] [SPEAKER_03]: put it in a drawer and I think

[00:23:28] [SPEAKER_03]: eventually I'm going to get something

[00:23:30] [SPEAKER_03]: that will help me fix this but until

[00:23:33] [SPEAKER_03]: I do I just put it away knowing you

[00:23:36] [SPEAKER_03]: know I have a whole drawer full of

[00:23:38] [SPEAKER_03]: needs to be repaired that I don't have

[00:23:40] [SPEAKER_03]: the proper pieces for.

[00:23:43] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah and a friend of mine is a

[00:23:47] [SPEAKER_01]: photographer in LA and she told me that

[00:23:50] [SPEAKER_01]: they actually used to buy a lot of like

[00:23:54] [SPEAKER_01]: broken jewelry and broken pieces and

[00:23:56] [SPEAKER_01]: stuff because they would use them as

[00:23:58] [SPEAKER_01]: props and photo shoots so like if a

[00:24:01] [SPEAKER_01]: stone was missing she just wouldn't

[00:24:02] [SPEAKER_01]: put that part of the necklace in the

[00:24:05] [SPEAKER_01]: shop with something else.

[00:24:06] [SPEAKER_01]: Right or like if she would pile

[00:24:09] [SPEAKER_01]: other stuff on it so you wouldn't

[00:24:11] [SPEAKER_01]: notice that the bottom necklace had

[00:24:12] [SPEAKER_01]: something wrong with it because the

[00:24:14] [SPEAKER_01]: necklace is not possible.

[00:24:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Does that make art or do other things like that?

[00:24:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah so there's lots of options you know

[00:24:20] [SPEAKER_03]: you don't.

[00:24:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Over it?

[00:24:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Like a move to make it.

[00:24:24] [SPEAKER_03]: The other thing is that's like

[00:24:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Chico's makes really nice jewelry.

[00:24:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh they do.

[00:24:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Well Chico's jewelry is all copies

[00:24:34] [SPEAKER_03]: of originals they went through New

[00:24:36] [SPEAKER_03]: York and they bought the original

[00:24:38] [SPEAKER_03]: pieces then they send them out.

[00:24:40] [SPEAKER_03]: Done.

[00:24:42] [SPEAKER_03]: So they're not trying to be a

[00:24:44] [SPEAKER_03]: vintage but their pieces are amazing

[00:24:47] [SPEAKER_03]: because they're using actual vintage

[00:24:50] [SPEAKER_03]: pieces to create what they're making

[00:24:53] [SPEAKER_03]: now and so that's why their stuff is

[00:24:56] [SPEAKER_03]: really nice well-made and quality.

[00:25:00] [SPEAKER_03]: So I always say think about what's

[00:25:03] [SPEAKER_03]: going to be hot not today but ten

[00:25:05] [SPEAKER_03]: years from today.

[00:25:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Think about what's well made for me

[00:25:09] [SPEAKER_03]: J. Crew makes great jewelry.

[00:25:12] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah they do they do and some of Betsy

[00:25:15] [SPEAKER_01]: Johnson's like earlier stuff.

[00:25:18] [SPEAKER_01]: Yup.

[00:25:18] [SPEAKER_01]: Like really nice.

[00:25:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah the vintage Betsy's.

[00:25:23] [SPEAKER_03]: I'll tell you another so Pada was

[00:25:26] [SPEAKER_03]: is a sterling silver company that used

[00:25:29] [SPEAKER_03]: to do home parties now they don't do

[00:25:31] [SPEAKER_03]: the home parties they only sell online

[00:25:33] [SPEAKER_03]: their stuff in my opinion which is

[00:25:36] [SPEAKER_03]: my humble opinion their new stuff is

[00:25:37] [SPEAKER_03]: not anything like their old stuff.

[00:25:41] [SPEAKER_03]: So if you find the old so Pada it's

[00:25:43] [SPEAKER_03]: going to be really heavy really well

[00:25:45] [SPEAKER_03]: made it doesn't it doesn't have air

[00:25:47] [SPEAKER_03]: in it it doesn't ding it doesn't

[00:25:49] [SPEAKER_03]: dent.

[00:25:50] [SPEAKER_03]: So those are the kind of things you

[00:25:52] [SPEAKER_03]: want to know now.

[00:25:53] [SPEAKER_03]: So if you're out looking you know

[00:25:55] [SPEAKER_03]: the difference and you know what to

[00:25:57] [SPEAKER_03]: put away but like a couple years

[00:26:00] [SPEAKER_03]: ago I was looking up some J. Crew

[00:26:01] [SPEAKER_03]: stuff and I said you know what just

[00:26:03] [SPEAKER_03]: put it in a drawer well wait ten

[00:26:04] [SPEAKER_03]: years because it's so well made

[00:26:08] [SPEAKER_03]: that you got to remember the costume

[00:26:10] [SPEAKER_03]: jewelry you're collecting today

[00:26:12] [SPEAKER_03]: they called it junk jewelry.

[00:26:15] [SPEAKER_03]: It was a little bit more junk jewelry

[00:26:18] [SPEAKER_03]: wasn't meant to be kept a hundred

[00:26:20] [SPEAKER_03]: years like it is you know it was

[00:26:23] [SPEAKER_03]: something a bubble that you could buy

[00:26:25] [SPEAKER_03]: that was relatively inexpensive and

[00:26:28] [SPEAKER_03]: you were supposed to just put it

[00:26:30] [SPEAKER_03]: away next season and be done with

[00:26:31] [SPEAKER_03]: it.

[00:26:33] [SPEAKER_03]: So that was the idea.

[00:26:34] [SPEAKER_03]: But it was so well made we're all

[00:26:36] [SPEAKER_03]: still loving it.

[00:26:37] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah and I think too because they

[00:26:40] [SPEAKER_01]: wanted it to be comparable to

[00:26:42] [SPEAKER_01]: the higher end pieces.

[00:26:44] [SPEAKER_01]: So they made them much better

[00:26:47] [SPEAKER_01]: quality so they wouldn't you know

[00:26:49] [SPEAKER_01]: just fall apart after one

[00:26:50] [SPEAKER_01]: wearing.

[00:26:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Well the problem is now

[00:26:53] [SPEAKER_03]: everything is so cheaply made

[00:26:56] [SPEAKER_03]: everybody.

[00:26:57] [SPEAKER_03]: But the difference is everybody's

[00:26:59] [SPEAKER_03]: so concerned with their bottom line

[00:27:01] [SPEAKER_03]: they're looking even a restaurant

[00:27:03] [SPEAKER_03]: I go to we go two times a week

[00:27:05] [SPEAKER_03]: because we're vegans to this one

[00:27:06] [SPEAKER_03]: restaurant I went in and the menu

[00:27:08] [SPEAKER_03]: was totally changed and they

[00:27:10] [SPEAKER_03]: didn't have any of the stuff I

[00:27:11] [SPEAKER_03]: liked they took all the stuff that

[00:27:13] [SPEAKER_03]: they weren't making a lot of money

[00:27:14] [SPEAKER_03]: on because it was their prices were

[00:27:17] [SPEAKER_03]: reasonable on it and they changed

[00:27:19] [SPEAKER_03]: it.

[00:27:20] [SPEAKER_03]: So every and I understand

[00:27:22] [SPEAKER_03]: you have to make money it's

[00:27:24] [SPEAKER_03]: it's if you're doing this

[00:27:25] [SPEAKER_03]: to be a reseller and you're not

[00:27:28] [SPEAKER_03]: making money you're a hobbyist

[00:27:29] [SPEAKER_03]: you're not you know

[00:27:31] [SPEAKER_03]: very expensive hobby

[00:27:34] [SPEAKER_03]: businesses make money if you're

[00:27:36] [SPEAKER_03]: not making money you're a hobbyist

[00:27:38] [SPEAKER_03]: which I can't say anything because I probably

[00:27:40] [SPEAKER_03]: am a hobbyist but

[00:27:42] [SPEAKER_03]: you know it's the difference between

[00:27:44] [SPEAKER_03]: there was one of the

[00:27:46] [SPEAKER_03]: costume jewelry manufacturers

[00:27:48] [SPEAKER_03]: and there are still

[00:27:50] [SPEAKER_03]: active today online

[00:27:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Juliana jewelry

[00:27:53] [SPEAKER_03]: that was

[00:27:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Alastair the two guys that started

[00:27:58] [SPEAKER_03]: it he's still identifying

[00:28:00] [SPEAKER_03]: 100 pieces of jewelry a week

[00:28:01] [SPEAKER_03]: online you could submit

[00:28:03] [SPEAKER_03]: what and he'll tell you if they

[00:28:06] [SPEAKER_03]: made it or not but

[00:28:09] [SPEAKER_03]: there's very few people like

[00:28:12] [SPEAKER_03]: that that are still out there active

[00:28:13] [SPEAKER_03]: in being you identify stuff

[00:28:17] [SPEAKER_03]: so

[00:28:19] [SPEAKER_03]: learning and knowing that

[00:28:20] [SPEAKER_03]: how to tell the difference between things

[00:28:22] [SPEAKER_03]: and I'll do that for

[00:28:25] [SPEAKER_03]: you one day I'll show people how to

[00:28:26] [SPEAKER_03]: tell a Juliana and there's

[00:28:28] [SPEAKER_03]: yes yeah there's different

[00:28:32] [SPEAKER_03]: telltale signs

[00:28:33] [SPEAKER_03]: that you can do

[00:28:35] [SPEAKER_03]: that you can look at that you can

[00:28:37] [SPEAKER_03]: know to know whether

[00:28:39] [SPEAKER_03]: it really is or not

[00:28:40] [SPEAKER_03]: and then there's different groups

[00:28:43] [SPEAKER_03]: online that will help you identify it

[00:28:45] [SPEAKER_03]: but yes yes

[00:28:46] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah so it's learning

[00:28:49] [SPEAKER_03]: and that's again it goes back to I said

[00:28:51] [SPEAKER_03]: pick something

[00:28:53] [SPEAKER_03]: and learn about that

[00:28:55] [SPEAKER_03]: one thing

[00:28:57] [SPEAKER_03]: so that

[00:28:59] [SPEAKER_03]: you can spot those pieces

[00:29:01] [SPEAKER_03]: the other thing I'll tell you is

[00:29:04] [SPEAKER_03]: touching

[00:29:05] [SPEAKER_03]: things you know

[00:29:06] [SPEAKER_03]: I handle thousands of pieces of jewelry

[00:29:11] [SPEAKER_03]: every day so I can

[00:29:13] [SPEAKER_03]: literally close my eyes and tell you

[00:29:15] [SPEAKER_03]: what's new what's old

[00:29:16] [SPEAKER_03]: just by how it feels in my hands

[00:29:19] [SPEAKER_03]: learns one

[00:29:21] [SPEAKER_03]: brand or one time

[00:29:23] [SPEAKER_03]: period make your

[00:29:25] [SPEAKER_03]: mind up to really become

[00:29:28] [SPEAKER_03]: informed in that

[00:29:29] [SPEAKER_03]: one period

[00:29:31] [SPEAKER_03]: so that you know it inside now before

[00:29:33] [SPEAKER_03]: you jump to the next thing

[00:29:35] [SPEAKER_03]: because if you're just constantly jumping

[00:29:37] [SPEAKER_03]: jumping jumping between

[00:29:39] [SPEAKER_03]: different things you never

[00:29:41] [SPEAKER_03]: really learn

[00:29:43] [SPEAKER_03]: the one you know one thing

[00:29:45] [SPEAKER_03]: you know you know a little bit about a lot

[00:29:47] [SPEAKER_03]: and that's great if you're

[00:29:49] [SPEAKER_03]: large scaling it

[00:29:51] [SPEAKER_03]: but if you really want to make money

[00:29:53] [SPEAKER_03]: learn about

[00:29:56] [SPEAKER_03]: a certain

[00:29:57] [SPEAKER_03]: specific piece of jewelry

[00:29:59] [SPEAKER_03]: time period designer

[00:30:02] [SPEAKER_03]: there's a lot of pieces out there

[00:30:05] [SPEAKER_03]: that are worth a lot of money

[00:30:07] [SPEAKER_03]: there's Maryam Haskell she didn't sign

[00:30:09] [SPEAKER_03]: anything till the 40s

[00:30:11] [SPEAKER_03]: she's got tons of stuff that's still out

[00:30:13] [SPEAKER_03]: there if you can learn how can I

[00:30:15] [SPEAKER_03]: tell what is a Maryam Haskell piece

[00:30:17] [SPEAKER_03]: you'll be able to walk in a

[00:30:19] [SPEAKER_03]: store and pick up something

[00:30:21] [SPEAKER_03]: and you know

[00:30:23] [SPEAKER_03]: this weekend

[00:30:25] [SPEAKER_03]: I told you I don't get out much

[00:30:27] [SPEAKER_03]: I went in a store and I bought

[00:30:29] [SPEAKER_03]: a piece for a couple of dollars

[00:30:32] [SPEAKER_03]: and I

[00:30:33] [SPEAKER_03]: bought a lot so I really didn't look at it

[00:30:36] [SPEAKER_03]: and when I looked

[00:30:37] [SPEAKER_03]: at it I knew immediately

[00:30:39] [SPEAKER_03]: it was 1822

[00:30:41] [SPEAKER_03]: 18 to 22 carat gold

[00:30:43] [SPEAKER_03]: it had diamonds

[00:30:45] [SPEAKER_03]: it had a beautiful amethyst

[00:30:47] [SPEAKER_03]: it was probably

[00:30:48] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm guessing because I haven't looked it up yet

[00:30:51] [SPEAKER_03]: it's somewhere on my desk but it was probably

[00:30:55] [SPEAKER_03]: early 1900s

[00:30:56] [SPEAKER_03]: oh wow

[00:30:57] [SPEAKER_03]: beautiful piece

[00:30:59] [SPEAKER_03]: and I just knew

[00:31:01] [SPEAKER_03]: when I touched it that it was

[00:31:03] [SPEAKER_03]: I came back to my house

[00:31:05] [SPEAKER_03]: I scratched it

[00:31:06] [SPEAKER_03]: I took out my gold testing

[00:31:07] [SPEAKER_03]: the only

[00:31:11] [SPEAKER_03]: test acid I had at my house

[00:31:12] [SPEAKER_03]: was 18 carat and it tested

[00:31:14] [SPEAKER_03]: 18 carat so it's

[00:31:16] [SPEAKER_03]: 18 carat or more

[00:31:17] [SPEAKER_03]: I didn't have any of my 22 or 24 carat

[00:31:20] [SPEAKER_03]: at the house

[00:31:21] [SPEAKER_03]: so it's something like that

[00:31:24] [SPEAKER_03]: another thing I'm going to tell you

[00:31:26] [SPEAKER_03]: that is kind of a secret

[00:31:28] [SPEAKER_03]: but it's not

[00:31:30] [SPEAKER_03]: a lot of times

[00:31:31] [SPEAKER_03]: if you're out

[00:31:32] [SPEAKER_03]: and you see a ring that's not marked

[00:31:35] [SPEAKER_03]: I have bought many

[00:31:37] [SPEAKER_03]: many many many

[00:31:39] [SPEAKER_03]: gold rings that were

[00:31:41] [SPEAKER_03]: sized and when they size

[00:31:43] [SPEAKER_03]: the ring you lose the

[00:31:45] [SPEAKER_03]: mark

[00:31:47] [SPEAKER_03]: oh okay

[00:31:48] [SPEAKER_03]: nobody sizes your ring and then

[00:31:51] [SPEAKER_03]: restamps it

[00:31:52] [SPEAKER_03]: you know it's whatever carat it is

[00:31:55] [SPEAKER_03]: they know it is

[00:31:56] [SPEAKER_03]: you bring it in for them to size

[00:31:59] [SPEAKER_03]: and they

[00:32:00] [SPEAKER_03]: if they're making it smaller they cut it

[00:32:03] [SPEAKER_03]: and they solder it

[00:32:05] [SPEAKER_03]: if they're making it bigger

[00:32:06] [SPEAKER_03]: they cut it and they open it

[00:32:08] [SPEAKER_03]: and add gold to it

[00:32:10] [SPEAKER_03]: but they're not concerned about remarking it

[00:32:12] [SPEAKER_03]: so I have

[00:32:15] [SPEAKER_03]: many many many times

[00:32:17] [SPEAKER_03]: I bought a $4,000 ring

[00:32:19] [SPEAKER_03]: I got for a dollar

[00:32:20] [SPEAKER_03]: I could see where it had been soldered

[00:32:22] [SPEAKER_03]: it was a black line on the ring

[00:32:25] [SPEAKER_03]: everybody else thought it was junk

[00:32:26] [SPEAKER_03]: because they're thinking

[00:32:28] [SPEAKER_03]: look it looks terrible

[00:32:30] [SPEAKER_03]: it's already scratched off

[00:32:32] [SPEAKER_03]: but I immediately recognized it

[00:32:34] [SPEAKER_03]: as a solder mark

[00:32:36] [SPEAKER_01]: so for a piece like that

[00:32:38] [SPEAKER_01]: would you just

[00:32:40] [SPEAKER_01]: sell it for scrap or would you resell it

[00:32:42] [SPEAKER_01]: to somebody who

[00:32:43] [SPEAKER_03]: well that particular piece I took to my gemologist

[00:32:46] [SPEAKER_03]: and got an appraisal on

[00:32:48] [SPEAKER_03]: it's a $4,000 piece that I'll sell

[00:32:50] [SPEAKER_03]: for a thousand

[00:32:52] [SPEAKER_03]: oh okay

[00:32:53] [SPEAKER_03]: but I just scrapped

[00:32:55] [SPEAKER_03]: a beautiful piece

[00:32:56] [SPEAKER_03]: I paid a couple of bucks for it

[00:32:58] [SPEAKER_03]: it was 7

[00:33:02] [SPEAKER_03]: coins

[00:33:03] [SPEAKER_03]: from

[00:33:06] [SPEAKER_03]: 1908

[00:33:07] [SPEAKER_03]: they were cooners

[00:33:08] [SPEAKER_03]: they were a different country

[00:33:09] [SPEAKER_03]: but the way it was set in the bracelet

[00:33:14] [SPEAKER_03]: they

[00:33:14] [SPEAKER_03]: soldered a bezel around it

[00:33:17] [SPEAKER_03]: and made it into a bracelet

[00:33:18] [SPEAKER_03]: well it ruined the value of the coin

[00:33:20] [SPEAKER_03]: so no coin collector

[00:33:22] [SPEAKER_03]: is going to want it

[00:33:24] [SPEAKER_03]: because they're wanting it for the coin

[00:33:26] [SPEAKER_03]: for the solid gold coin

[00:33:28] [SPEAKER_03]: a jewelry person

[00:33:30] [SPEAKER_03]: may buy it

[00:33:32] [SPEAKER_03]: you know it was probably worth 5

[00:33:34] [SPEAKER_03]: to $6,000

[00:33:36] [SPEAKER_03]: but in scrap it was

[00:33:38] [SPEAKER_03]: 2000 so when gold was so high

[00:33:40] [SPEAKER_03]: a few weeks ago I scrapped it

[00:33:42] [SPEAKER_03]: mm okay

[00:33:44] [SPEAKER_03]: watch the price of gold

[00:33:46] [SPEAKER_03]: right you know what's happening

[00:33:48] [SPEAKER_03]: but for me

[00:33:50] [SPEAKER_03]: at that point I was like

[00:33:51] [SPEAKER_03]: I could sit on it for the next 10 years

[00:33:54] [SPEAKER_03]: waiting for 4 or 5,000

[00:33:56] [SPEAKER_03]: I could put it for 4 or 5,000

[00:33:58] [SPEAKER_03]: and still only get 2,000

[00:33:59] [SPEAKER_03]: I might as well scrap it when gold was high

[00:34:02] [SPEAKER_01]: right

[00:34:04] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah so a lot of that is

[00:34:06] [SPEAKER_01]: just the timing

[00:34:08] [SPEAKER_01]: paying attention to the price of gold

[00:34:10] [SPEAKER_01]: or silver whatever it is

[00:34:11] [SPEAKER_03]: it has damage like I have this chain

[00:34:14] [SPEAKER_03]: so

[00:34:16] [SPEAKER_03]: I had bought

[00:34:17] [SPEAKER_03]: a lot of jewelry

[00:34:19] [SPEAKER_03]: from somebody I buy from all the time

[00:34:21] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm not a very good negotiator

[00:34:23] [SPEAKER_03]: I'll be honest with you I'm not a haggler

[00:34:26] [SPEAKER_03]: it's not personal

[00:34:28] [SPEAKER_03]: okay

[00:34:28] [SPEAKER_03]: if you come to me and you say

[00:34:30] [SPEAKER_03]: which I just had a girl bring me a bunch of stuff

[00:34:33] [SPEAKER_03]: and what she wanted was what I'm going to end up selling it for

[00:34:36] [SPEAKER_03]: and

[00:34:37] [SPEAKER_03]: it's not personal

[00:34:38] [SPEAKER_03]: it's business I just say no

[00:34:41] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't haggle with you

[00:34:42] [SPEAKER_03]: right

[00:34:43] [SPEAKER_03]: but like

[00:34:46] [SPEAKER_03]: if you come to me with a box

[00:34:48] [SPEAKER_03]: of jewelry and tell me you want 100 bucks

[00:34:50] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm going to look in and see

[00:34:52] [SPEAKER_03]: am I going to be able to make 400

[00:34:53] [SPEAKER_03]: because for me that's my number

[00:34:55] [SPEAKER_03]: I have to make that much more

[00:34:58] [SPEAKER_03]: with my store and my employees

[00:35:00] [SPEAKER_03]: if I spend

[00:35:01] [SPEAKER_03]: and I tell people if I spend a dollar

[00:35:03] [SPEAKER_03]: I've got to be able to sell it for 5

[00:35:05] [SPEAKER_03]: if I can't buy it

[00:35:08] [SPEAKER_03]: it doesn't make sense

[00:35:08] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm not going to spend $100

[00:35:10] [SPEAKER_03]: to make $100

[00:35:12] [SPEAKER_03]: because after I pay taxes

[00:35:15] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah you're not even making the 100

[00:35:17] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm not making the 100 and then

[00:35:18] [SPEAKER_03]: with my employees and the 20%

[00:35:21] [SPEAKER_03]: the listing sites take

[00:35:22] [SPEAKER_03]: I can't do business like that

[00:35:25] [SPEAKER_03]: but

[00:35:26] [SPEAKER_03]: if you're just a reseller

[00:35:29] [SPEAKER_03]: selling on Facebook or selling to your friends

[00:35:31] [SPEAKER_03]: or selling in a flea market

[00:35:32] [SPEAKER_03]: or doing personal sales

[00:35:35] [SPEAKER_03]: like eBay or something like that

[00:35:36] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah you could double your money

[00:35:38] [SPEAKER_03]: and be happy because you have no

[00:35:40] [SPEAKER_03]: extra cost

[00:35:42] [SPEAKER_03]: you know my 5 grand on the

[00:35:44] [SPEAKER_03]: store that's off

[00:35:46] [SPEAKER_03]: the top every month

[00:35:49] [SPEAKER_03]: not including my

[00:35:50] [SPEAKER_03]: not including my employees

[00:35:52] [SPEAKER_03]: so like

[00:35:53] [SPEAKER_03]: just to give you an example

[00:35:56] [SPEAKER_03]: all this and I don't know if you can see it

[00:35:59] [SPEAKER_03]: can you see

[00:36:00] [SPEAKER_03]: can you see what's in my hand

[00:36:02] [SPEAKER_03]: am I gold?

[00:36:04] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah so all this

[00:36:06] [SPEAKER_03]: I got out of a custom jewelry lot

[00:36:07] [SPEAKER_03]: it's all gold

[00:36:10] but

[00:36:13] [SPEAKER_03]: somebody

[00:36:13] [SPEAKER_03]: changed the class

[00:36:15] [SPEAKER_03]: on this piece because

[00:36:17] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm sure they broke the class

[00:36:19] [SPEAKER_03]: and they put on whatever class they had

[00:36:21] [SPEAKER_03]: which was gold filled

[00:36:23] [SPEAKER_03]: but the chain is 14 carat

[00:36:25] [SPEAKER_03]: so when I check

[00:36:27] [SPEAKER_03]: jewelry and this is very

[00:36:29] [SPEAKER_03]: important for your beginning

[00:36:31] [SPEAKER_03]: jewelry

[00:36:33] [SPEAKER_03]: people who are wanting to get in the business

[00:36:36] [SPEAKER_03]: people are very

[00:36:38] [SPEAKER_03]: deceptive

[00:36:40] [SPEAKER_03]: so they I'm going to buy this piece right?

[00:36:44] [SPEAKER_03]: when people bring it to me

[00:36:46] [SPEAKER_03]: and ask me to buy it

[00:36:48] [SPEAKER_03]: I test the class

[00:36:50] [SPEAKER_03]: I test

[00:36:51] [SPEAKER_03]: the end and I test

[00:36:54] [SPEAKER_03]: the chain

[00:36:55] [SPEAKER_03]: and not that I'm skeptical

[00:36:57] [SPEAKER_03]: or that I have learned

[00:36:59] [SPEAKER_03]: by getting burned

[00:37:01] [SPEAKER_03]: that it's very easy to change the class

[00:37:03] [SPEAKER_03]: on something

[00:37:04] [SPEAKER_03]: and you think you have one thing

[00:37:06] [SPEAKER_03]: and you have something else

[00:37:07] [SPEAKER_03]: all the time I buy

[00:37:10] [SPEAKER_03]: a lot of jewelry from somebody

[00:37:12] [SPEAKER_03]: who buys a lot of jewelry

[00:37:14] [SPEAKER_03]: and he usually brings me the costume because he doesn't do anything with costume

[00:37:17] [SPEAKER_03]: but he'll bring

[00:37:19] [SPEAKER_03]: silver and stuff as well

[00:37:21] [SPEAKER_03]: and there has been

[00:37:23] [SPEAKER_03]: so many times that

[00:37:25] [SPEAKER_03]: after I bought it

[00:37:26] [SPEAKER_03]: and he knows me well

[00:37:27] [SPEAKER_03]: I know him well I put it on the side

[00:37:29] [SPEAKER_03]: he gives me back whatever the weight

[00:37:32] [SPEAKER_03]: of it that I bought

[00:37:33] [SPEAKER_03]: but they'll change

[00:37:35] [SPEAKER_03]: they'll take a sterling silver chain

[00:37:38] [SPEAKER_03]: and they'll add

[00:37:41] [SPEAKER_03]: this little piece

[00:37:43] [SPEAKER_03]: to it

[00:37:47] [SPEAKER_03]: they'll add

[00:37:48] [SPEAKER_03]: this little piece right here

[00:37:51] [SPEAKER_03]: that says sterling

[00:37:53] [SPEAKER_03]: see that little piece

[00:37:55] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah like part of the class

[00:37:57] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah what they'll do

[00:37:58] [SPEAKER_03]: is they'll buy

[00:37:59] [SPEAKER_03]: 100 of those in sterling

[00:38:03] [SPEAKER_03]: they'll cut the chain

[00:38:05] [SPEAKER_03]: and they'll cut the class

[00:38:07] [SPEAKER_03]: they'll insert that piece

[00:38:09] [SPEAKER_03]: that says sterling

[00:38:12] [SPEAKER_03]: and sell it as sterling

[00:38:14] [SPEAKER_03]: and it'll be just silver plated

[00:38:16] [SPEAKER_03]: so one of the things you can do

[00:38:19] [SPEAKER_03]: if you're

[00:38:20] [SPEAKER_03]: a novice and you don't know

[00:38:22] [SPEAKER_03]: and I do it anyway

[00:38:24] [SPEAKER_03]: is when I'm going through jewelry

[00:38:25] [SPEAKER_03]: I always have a magnet

[00:38:28] [SPEAKER_03]: but when I'm going through

[00:38:29] [SPEAKER_03]: say a box of earrings

[00:38:31] [SPEAKER_03]: I look to see if it's not magnetic

[00:38:34] [SPEAKER_03]: if it's magnetic

[00:38:36] [SPEAKER_03]: it's not sterling or gold

[00:38:38] [SPEAKER_03]: brass or gold

[00:38:39] [SPEAKER_03]: right

[00:38:40] [SPEAKER_03]: a lot of the vintage jewelry though

[00:38:43] [SPEAKER_03]: the old stuff is magnetic

[00:38:46] [SPEAKER_03]: nothing wrong with it

[00:38:47] [SPEAKER_03]: it's the old vintage jewelry

[00:38:49] [SPEAKER_03]: it definitely is something that's going to be

[00:38:51] [SPEAKER_03]: magnetic and you're going to

[00:38:54] [SPEAKER_03]: know it

[00:38:55] [SPEAKER_03]: because it's going to

[00:38:57] [SPEAKER_03]: jump to your magnet

[00:38:59] [SPEAKER_03]: so

[00:39:02] [SPEAKER_03]: the other thing you need to know

[00:39:04] [SPEAKER_03]: is a lot of times

[00:39:05] [SPEAKER_03]: there is a spring

[00:39:07] [SPEAKER_03]: in the class

[00:39:08] [SPEAKER_03]: that will be attracted to a magnet

[00:39:11] [SPEAKER_03]: so sometimes

[00:39:12] [SPEAKER_03]: if the class is

[00:39:15] [SPEAKER_03]: magnetic a lot of the newer stuff

[00:39:18] [SPEAKER_03]: it has a spring in it

[00:39:20] [SPEAKER_03]: that's magnetic it doesn't mean the whole chain isn't

[00:39:22] [SPEAKER_03]: but inside that class

[00:39:26] [SPEAKER_03]: is

[00:39:27] [SPEAKER_03]: a piece that's attracting the magnet

[00:39:29] [SPEAKER_03]: and you don't want just

[00:39:30] [SPEAKER_03]: magnet you want to get a strong earth magnet

[00:39:32] [SPEAKER_02]: right

[00:39:33] [SPEAKER_03]: so the other trick is I'll take a box

[00:39:37] [SPEAKER_03]: of jewelry

[00:39:39] [SPEAKER_03]: and since I'm not prepared today

[00:39:41] [SPEAKER_03]: I can be the next time

[00:39:42] [SPEAKER_03]: I put my magnet all through the box

[00:39:45] [SPEAKER_03]: and see what it picks up

[00:39:46] [SPEAKER_03]: because then it's stuff I don't even have to look at

[00:39:49] [SPEAKER_03]: I only looked at it

[00:39:51] [SPEAKER_03]: and it's a piece of glass

[00:39:51] [SPEAKER_03]: if it was

[00:39:54] [SPEAKER_03]: attached because of the class

[00:39:57] [SPEAKER_03]: then I'm going to check it anyway

[00:40:00] [SPEAKER_03]: but

[00:40:01] [SPEAKER_03]: if it's attached like this

[00:40:05] [SPEAKER_03]: I know it's not silver

[00:40:07] [SPEAKER_03]: and it's not gold

[00:40:09] [SPEAKER_03]: so it's just an easy way

[00:40:12] [SPEAKER_03]: if you're a picker

[00:40:13] [SPEAKER_03]: and you're going through stuff

[00:40:15] [SPEAKER_03]: or if you're at

[00:40:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Salvation Army or Goodwill

[00:40:19] [SPEAKER_01]: or at a yard sale

[00:40:21] [SPEAKER_01]: or something

[00:40:21] [SPEAKER_01]: I keep the magnet on me

[00:40:23] [SPEAKER_01]: I do too, I keep that

[00:40:25] [SPEAKER_01]: I have a little tiny black light

[00:40:28] [SPEAKER_01]: that I keep in my bag

[00:40:30] [SPEAKER_03]: and keeping the black light

[00:40:32] [SPEAKER_03]: for

[00:40:35] [SPEAKER_01]: well because sometimes

[00:40:36] [SPEAKER_01]: I like to see if the glass is glowy

[00:40:39] [SPEAKER_01]: glass like if it's uranium glass

[00:40:41] [SPEAKER_01]: or something like that

[00:40:41] [SPEAKER_01]: so I keep a little black light

[00:40:43] [SPEAKER_03]: I was asking because there's different stones

[00:40:46] [SPEAKER_03]: that

[00:40:47] [SPEAKER_01]: and that's right like opalite does that too

[00:40:51] [SPEAKER_03]: that's why I was asking

[00:40:52] [SPEAKER_03]: so I keep

[00:40:54] [SPEAKER_03]: a black light

[00:40:56] [SPEAKER_03]: so when you look at these brooches

[00:41:00] [SPEAKER_03]: yes

[00:41:02] [SPEAKER_03]: all of these

[00:41:04] [SPEAKER_03]: are early

[00:41:05] [SPEAKER_03]: made in Austria

[00:41:06] [SPEAKER_03]: they have

[00:41:08] [SPEAKER_03]: the glass

[00:41:13] [SPEAKER_01]: absolutely beautiful so if you guys are listening to the audio version of this podcast

[00:41:17] [SPEAKER_01]: make sure you head on over to YouTube

[00:41:19] [SPEAKER_01]: so you can see

[00:41:20] [SPEAKER_01]: Lori's amazing display

[00:41:22] [SPEAKER_01]: of glowy jewelry

[00:41:24] [SPEAKER_03]: and the funny thing is

[00:41:27] [SPEAKER_03]: so anything plastic will glow

[00:41:29] [SPEAKER_03]: you know that right

[00:41:31] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah and some of the

[00:41:32] [SPEAKER_01]: um

[00:41:34] [SPEAKER_01]: I want to say it's like is it ceramic or something

[00:41:37] [SPEAKER_01]: because that will glow too

[00:41:38] [SPEAKER_03]: and then this is funny but

[00:41:41] [SPEAKER_03]: this is something important

[00:41:43] [SPEAKER_03]: for your

[00:41:43] [SPEAKER_03]: um

[00:41:44] [SPEAKER_03]: if you're starting out to know

[00:41:47] [SPEAKER_03]: is

[00:41:49] [SPEAKER_03]: amber

[00:41:50] [SPEAKER_03]: real amber should

[00:41:52] [SPEAKER_03]: aphor vests can you see that

[00:41:55] [SPEAKER_03]: yes yes I have a lot of amber

[00:41:57] [SPEAKER_03]: so this is real

[00:42:00] [SPEAKER_03]: amber see how it changes color

[00:42:02] [SPEAKER_03]: yes

[00:42:03] [SPEAKER_03]: that's a good way to know

[00:42:05] [SPEAKER_03]: if your amber is real

[00:42:09] [SPEAKER_03]: oh

[00:42:10] [SPEAKER_03]: there should definitely be

[00:42:13] [SPEAKER_03]: a change

[00:42:14] [SPEAKER_03]: that you can see

[00:42:16] [SPEAKER_03]: some will glow green

[00:42:18] [SPEAKER_03]: some will glow more of a bluey

[00:42:20] [SPEAKER_03]: yes like a blueish

[00:42:22] [SPEAKER_03]: purpley color

[00:42:22] [SPEAKER_03]: and it just depends on the amber where

[00:42:26] [SPEAKER_03]: it was from

[00:42:28] [SPEAKER_03]: but so

[00:42:30] [SPEAKER_03]: that's uh you know

[00:42:31] [SPEAKER_03]: but when I'm out I usually don't

[00:42:34] [SPEAKER_03]: have a black light with me

[00:42:35] [SPEAKER_03]: I always have a loop

[00:42:38] [SPEAKER_03]: and I always have a magnet

[00:42:39] [SPEAKER_03]: and I do have a loop

[00:42:41] [SPEAKER_03]: that has a black light

[00:42:43] [SPEAKER_03]: and I have had

[00:42:46] [SPEAKER_03]: customers come in with their black

[00:42:48] [SPEAKER_03]: light and they're looking

[00:42:49] [SPEAKER_03]: for the gemstones that change under

[00:42:52] [SPEAKER_03]: aphor vests of light

[00:42:54] [SPEAKER_03]: so another

[00:42:56] [SPEAKER_03]: thing that probably took me

[00:42:57] [SPEAKER_03]: 40 years to learn that I'll share

[00:43:00] [SPEAKER_03]: with you is

[00:43:03] [SPEAKER_03]: I used to look at

[00:43:06] [SPEAKER_03]: stones and if they had a foil back

[00:43:09] [SPEAKER_03]: I would assume they're rhinestones

[00:43:12] [SPEAKER_03]: and never had my attention to

[00:43:14] [SPEAKER_03]: and I just think oh it's rhinestones

[00:43:16] [SPEAKER_03]: it's got a foil back

[00:43:17] [SPEAKER_03]: it must be rhinestones

[00:43:20] [SPEAKER_03]: back in the 1800s

[00:43:21] [SPEAKER_03]: and early 1900s they foil back

[00:43:23] [SPEAKER_03]: their stones

[00:43:26] [SPEAKER_03]: oh see I didn't know that either

[00:43:28] [SPEAKER_03]: didn't have light

[00:43:29] [SPEAKER_03]: they only had candlelight

[00:43:32] [SPEAKER_03]: and they would put

[00:43:34] [SPEAKER_03]: a foil on

[00:43:35] [SPEAKER_03]: either the back of the stone

[00:43:37] [SPEAKER_03]: or the inside of the setting to make

[00:43:39] [SPEAKER_03]: it shine

[00:43:41] [SPEAKER_03]: at night

[00:43:42] [SPEAKER_03]: by candlelight

[00:43:44] [SPEAKER_03]: so then I had to think how many diamonds

[00:43:47] [SPEAKER_03]: have I thrown away because

[00:43:49] [SPEAKER_03]: I know that I automatically assumed

[00:43:51] [SPEAKER_03]: a diamond is going to be open set

[00:43:53] [SPEAKER_03]: because I grew up knowing

[00:43:56] [SPEAKER_01]: always open set

[00:43:57] [SPEAKER_01]: that's what I always believe too

[00:43:59] [SPEAKER_01]: but I'm glad you told me this

[00:44:01] [SPEAKER_03]: I have

[00:44:03] [SPEAKER_03]: very many older

[00:44:05] [SPEAKER_03]: pieces

[00:44:07] [SPEAKER_03]: that are real

[00:44:09] [SPEAKER_03]: and I just

[00:44:11] [SPEAKER_03]: would have assumed

[00:44:13] [SPEAKER_03]: and then the other giveaway is

[00:44:16] [SPEAKER_03]: they're never going to put a diamond

[00:44:18] [SPEAKER_03]: in a really cheap setting

[00:44:19] [SPEAKER_03]: unless you're cuddling them

[00:44:21] [SPEAKER_03]: so if you're looking at stuff

[00:44:24] [SPEAKER_03]: always keep in the back of your mind

[00:44:27] [SPEAKER_03]: if it's not

[00:44:29] [SPEAKER_03]: well crafted

[00:44:32] [SPEAKER_03]: always be looking for the well made

[00:44:35] [SPEAKER_03]: because

[00:44:37] [SPEAKER_03]: that's where you're going to get your scores

[00:44:38] [SPEAKER_03]: you know you're gonna

[00:44:40] [SPEAKER_03]: that's where your big finds are going to come

[00:44:43] [SPEAKER_03]: it's going to be

[00:44:44] [SPEAKER_03]: in you knowing that something's very well made

[00:44:51] [SPEAKER_03]: that detail

[00:44:53] [SPEAKER_03]: how do you know it's well made

[00:44:55] [SPEAKER_03]: okay getting back to that

[00:44:56] [SPEAKER_03]: how do you know if something's well made

[00:44:58] [SPEAKER_03]: you handle

[00:45:01] [SPEAKER_03]: I was going to say when you touch it

[00:45:02] [SPEAKER_03]: you can tell

[00:45:03] [SPEAKER_03]: and you will be able to

[00:45:06] [SPEAKER_03]: teach yourself

[00:45:08] [SPEAKER_03]: the difference

[00:45:09] [SPEAKER_03]: I know that

[00:45:12] [SPEAKER_03]: bake light they'll tell you smell the

[00:45:14] [SPEAKER_03]: camphor rub it against your pants

[00:45:16] [SPEAKER_03]: can you smell it well I don't have a very good sense of smell

[00:45:19] [SPEAKER_03]: so for me

[00:45:20] [SPEAKER_03]: the smell test has never worked

[00:45:23] [SPEAKER_03]: so

[00:45:23] [SPEAKER_03]: the other way to know

[00:45:26] [SPEAKER_03]: bake light

[00:45:27] [SPEAKER_03]: is

[00:45:28] [SPEAKER_03]: semi chrome

[00:45:33] [SPEAKER_03]: that's what I use

[00:45:34] [SPEAKER_03]: that's your go to but I will tell you this

[00:45:38] [SPEAKER_03]: a lot of black

[00:45:39] [SPEAKER_03]: bake light won't test with semi chrome

[00:45:43] [SPEAKER_03]: did you know that

[00:45:46] [SPEAKER_01]: I've never come across

[00:45:48] [SPEAKER_01]: a black piece of bake light

[00:45:50] [SPEAKER_03]: a lot of black bake light

[00:45:52] [SPEAKER_03]: and bake light that has been

[00:45:55] [SPEAKER_03]: sealed

[00:45:57] [SPEAKER_01]: won't

[00:45:59] [SPEAKER_01]: okay

[00:46:00] [SPEAKER_03]: one of

[00:46:02] [SPEAKER_03]: a good

[00:46:04] [SPEAKER_03]: giveaway on bake light

[00:46:06] [SPEAKER_03]: if it's a piece that has white

[00:46:08] [SPEAKER_03]: it won't be white

[00:46:11] [SPEAKER_03]: right

[00:46:12] [SPEAKER_03]: it'll be yellowed

[00:46:14] [SPEAKER_03]: so I have a lot of patriotic

[00:46:17] [SPEAKER_03]: bake light jewelry that's

[00:46:18] [SPEAKER_03]: originally it was red white blue

[00:46:20] [SPEAKER_03]: now it's yellow red and blue

[00:46:23] [SPEAKER_03]: because it yellows

[00:46:25] [SPEAKER_03]: people don't realize that there is

[00:46:27] [SPEAKER_03]: no new bake light

[00:46:29] [SPEAKER_01]: none yeah it's always

[00:46:30] [SPEAKER_01]: like kind of like that custody

[00:46:32] [SPEAKER_03]: kind of color well it's a resin

[00:46:35] [SPEAKER_03]: that they use now and there are

[00:46:37] [SPEAKER_03]: some artists out there that call it

[00:46:39] [SPEAKER_03]: bake light and they're using this

[00:46:40] [SPEAKER_03]: new resin

[00:46:42] [SPEAKER_03]: but it's a different formula

[00:46:45] [SPEAKER_03]: okay okay just

[00:46:47] [SPEAKER_03]: don't make it anymore

[00:46:48] [SPEAKER_03]: and then you got to be careful

[00:46:50] [SPEAKER_03]: with your old

[00:46:52] [SPEAKER_03]: phenolic

[00:46:55] [SPEAKER_03]: resins

[00:46:56] [SPEAKER_03]: because they're flammable those are the ones

[00:46:58] [SPEAKER_03]: that work at the same time as bake

[00:47:00] [SPEAKER_03]: light there were two are Caitlyn

[00:47:02] [SPEAKER_03]: and now they're

[00:47:04] [SPEAKER_03]: terming everything together

[00:47:05] [SPEAKER_03]: so bake light has become a generic word

[00:47:08] [SPEAKER_03]: for resin plastic

[00:47:11] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah because I saw as a matter of fact

[00:47:14] [SPEAKER_01]: on ebay the other day

[00:47:15] [SPEAKER_01]: someone had

[00:47:17] [SPEAKER_01]: a piece of celluloid

[00:47:19] [SPEAKER_01]: jewelry and they called that

[00:47:21] [SPEAKER_03]: bake light and it's become

[00:47:23] [SPEAKER_03]: acceptable yes

[00:47:25] [SPEAKER_03]: bake light as a term

[00:47:27] [SPEAKER_03]: covering all that but you need to know

[00:47:29] [SPEAKER_03]: the difference especially because

[00:47:31] [SPEAKER_03]: that is

[00:47:33] [SPEAKER_03]: the piece that you're talking about

[00:47:35] [SPEAKER_03]: is a very flammable

[00:47:38] [SPEAKER_03]: so you don't want to put chemical

[00:47:39] [SPEAKER_03]: on it uh huh and it's

[00:47:41] [SPEAKER_03]: real delicate too delicate

[00:47:43] [SPEAKER_03]: it's much more brittle

[00:47:45] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah it's an older

[00:47:47] [SPEAKER_03]: and really really intrusively

[00:47:49] [SPEAKER_03]: there are pieces that have both in them

[00:47:51] [SPEAKER_03]: that are mixed

[00:47:54] [SPEAKER_03]: okay those

[00:47:55] [SPEAKER_03]: so you'll get an old piece

[00:47:57] [SPEAKER_03]: so um

[00:47:59] [SPEAKER_03]: I keep

[00:48:01] [SPEAKER_03]: a drawer

[00:48:02] [SPEAKER_03]: that has some of my old

[00:48:07] [SPEAKER_03]: um I love walking around

[00:48:09] [SPEAKER_03]: your jewelry room

[00:48:11] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm insane

[00:48:12] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean I'm insane

[00:48:15] [SPEAKER_01]: so

[00:48:16] [SPEAKER_01]: it's amazing

[00:48:17] [SPEAKER_01]: that's like Disneyland for us jewelry

[00:48:20] [SPEAKER_01]: people I'm telling you

[00:48:22] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm insane I'll kind of walk you around

[00:48:25] [SPEAKER_03]: now that I'm up

[00:48:26] [SPEAKER_03]: but like this is going to be

[00:48:29] [SPEAKER_03]: see these are your old

[00:48:32] [SPEAKER_03]: your old um

[00:48:33] [SPEAKER_03]: um

[00:48:36] [SPEAKER_01]: resins the resins and plastics look at those flowers

[00:48:39] [SPEAKER_01]: those are pretty

[00:48:40] [SPEAKER_03]: but these are going to be your really

[00:48:42] [SPEAKER_03]: your older older pieces

[00:48:45] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah

[00:48:46] [SPEAKER_03]: um

[00:48:48] [SPEAKER_03]: just because and like this is big

[00:48:50] [SPEAKER_01]: light and from aim the camera down a little bit more

[00:48:55] [SPEAKER_01]: so we can see

[00:48:58] [SPEAKER_01]: can you see this piece

[00:48:59] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah raise it up higher

[00:49:02] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah right there

[00:49:04] [SPEAKER_01]: so this is oh that's beautiful

[00:49:06] [SPEAKER_03]: and I have another drawer

[00:49:08] [SPEAKER_03]: of all big light

[00:49:09] [SPEAKER_03]: but um

[00:49:12] [SPEAKER_03]: this is good these are your

[00:49:13] [SPEAKER_03]: your older plastics

[00:49:18] [SPEAKER_03]: see this

[00:49:19] [SPEAKER_03]: and it's on the

[00:49:21] [SPEAKER_03]: yes I love pieces like that

[00:49:24] [SPEAKER_03]: and then this is big

[00:49:25] [SPEAKER_03]: a light but it won't test

[00:49:27] [SPEAKER_03]: because the black

[00:49:29] [SPEAKER_03]: has it doesn't always

[00:49:31] [SPEAKER_03]: test

[00:49:33] [SPEAKER_03]: no the other thing you could do

[00:49:35] [SPEAKER_03]: is you could submerge it in hot

[00:49:37] [SPEAKER_03]: water to know

[00:49:40] [SPEAKER_03]: to know the difference

[00:49:41] [SPEAKER_03]: but that that won't damage it

[00:49:43] [SPEAKER_03]: no

[00:49:46] [SPEAKER_03]: no

[00:49:46] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm not saying put it in something that's just

[00:49:49] [SPEAKER_03]: boiling but the thing about

[00:49:51] [SPEAKER_03]: bake light is

[00:49:53] [SPEAKER_03]: once it's cast it can't be recast

[00:49:55] [SPEAKER_03]: your other resins can

[00:49:57] [SPEAKER_03]: they could be melted down it's a bake a light

[00:50:00] [SPEAKER_03]: okay

[00:50:01] [SPEAKER_03]: um this is

[00:50:03] [SPEAKER_03]: gonna be

[00:50:05] [SPEAKER_03]: your marble these are really big now

[00:50:10] [SPEAKER_03]: this is going to be your carved

[00:50:13] [SPEAKER_03]: can you see the carving

[00:50:15] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah now is that what they call

[00:50:17] [SPEAKER_01]: cinnabar or a cinnabar

[00:50:18] [SPEAKER_01]: or something different

[00:50:20] [SPEAKER_01]: cinnabar is something different

[00:50:21] [SPEAKER_03]: I'll show you cinnabar

[00:50:22] [SPEAKER_03]: just so you know

[00:50:25] [SPEAKER_03]: yes

[00:50:26] [SPEAKER_03]: cinnabar this is cinnabar right here

[00:50:31] [SPEAKER_03]: that

[00:50:33] [SPEAKER_03]: yes

[00:50:35] [SPEAKER_03]: so that's bake a light

[00:50:37] [SPEAKER_03]: okay this is cinnabar

[00:50:40] [SPEAKER_03]: this is cinnabar

[00:50:41] [SPEAKER_03]: so and what cinnabar

[00:50:44] [SPEAKER_03]: is it's

[00:50:45] [SPEAKER_03]: dipped

[00:50:46] [SPEAKER_03]: and dipped and dipped and dipped

[00:50:49] [SPEAKER_03]: and dipped and dried and dipped and dried

[00:50:51] [SPEAKER_03]: and dipped and dried and dipped

[00:50:52] [SPEAKER_03]: with cinnabar

[00:50:55] [SPEAKER_03]: you should be able to see

[00:50:58] [SPEAKER_03]: um

[00:50:59] [SPEAKER_03]: where it's been submerged so many times

[00:51:02] [SPEAKER_03]: the layers and layers and layers

[00:51:04] [SPEAKER_03]: there's a certain amount of layering

[00:51:05] [SPEAKER_03]: into it

[00:51:07] [SPEAKER_03]: okay

[00:51:07] [SPEAKER_03]: oh but again

[00:51:10] [SPEAKER_03]: it's going back

[00:51:12] [SPEAKER_03]: to learning one thing

[00:51:14] [SPEAKER_03]: and knowing it well

[00:51:15] [SPEAKER_03]: something you love

[00:51:17] [SPEAKER_03]: that you can you know

[00:51:19] [SPEAKER_03]: so this is my rhinestone room

[00:51:23] [SPEAKER_03]: and

[00:51:24] [SPEAKER_03]: these are all done

[00:51:26] [SPEAKER_03]: by

[00:51:28] [SPEAKER_01]: color

[00:51:29] [SPEAKER_01]: that's so breathtaking

[00:51:31] [SPEAKER_01]: it's beautiful

[00:51:32] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah

[00:51:34] [SPEAKER_03]: you know your

[00:51:35] [SPEAKER_03]: orange and green

[00:51:36] [SPEAKER_03]: and then the gold

[00:51:38] [SPEAKER_03]: and then

[00:51:41] [SPEAKER_03]: your black and white

[00:51:45] [SPEAKER_03]: and your aurora borealis

[00:51:48] [SPEAKER_03]: and then this is all going to be

[00:51:50] [SPEAKER_03]: you know

[00:51:51] [SPEAKER_03]: well I have some special pieces in the bottom

[00:51:54] [SPEAKER_03]: some of these pieces

[00:51:56] [SPEAKER_03]: are insane

[00:52:00] [SPEAKER_03]: but then this is going to be

[00:52:04] [SPEAKER_03]: just by time periods

[00:52:06] [SPEAKER_03]: you know your new

[00:52:08] [SPEAKER_03]: your 80s and 90s

[00:52:09] [SPEAKER_03]: compared to your

[00:52:11] [SPEAKER_03]: 40s and 50s

[00:52:13] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah

[00:52:15] [SPEAKER_01]: look at that big pile of massive

[00:52:18] [SPEAKER_01]: rhinestones it's so beautiful

[00:52:19] [SPEAKER_01]: I know I'm bad

[00:52:21] [SPEAKER_03]: this is

[00:52:22] [SPEAKER_03]: I like the mixed metal pieces

[00:52:25] [SPEAKER_03]: oh that's lovely

[00:52:29] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah they're beautiful

[00:52:31] [SPEAKER_03]: then I like everything that's my problem

[00:52:33] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah me too

[00:52:35] [SPEAKER_01]: me too

[00:52:35] [SPEAKER_01]: and I'm attracted to everything

[00:52:38] [SPEAKER_01]: in some way like I love it all

[00:52:40] [SPEAKER_03]: I love it all I'm the same way

[00:52:42] [SPEAKER_03]: I love it all but here's the thing

[00:52:46] [SPEAKER_03]: yes I love it all

[00:52:47] [SPEAKER_03]: but

[00:52:49] [SPEAKER_03]: out of all the jewelry you see

[00:52:51] [SPEAKER_03]: I probably have less than

[00:52:53] [SPEAKER_03]: 1% listed

[00:52:55] [SPEAKER_03]: because it takes so

[00:52:57] [SPEAKER_03]: long for me to go through

[00:52:59] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah you know it's easy

[00:53:01] [SPEAKER_03]: to list the stuff that's signed

[00:53:03] [SPEAKER_03]: that's really easy

[00:53:04] [SPEAKER_03]: because all you do is google

[00:53:05] [SPEAKER_03]: google search it and see what

[00:53:07] [SPEAKER_03]: people are selling it for

[00:53:09] [SPEAKER_03]: get their description

[00:53:10] [SPEAKER_03]: it's the hard pieces I have

[00:53:14] [SPEAKER_03]: some resellers that bring me

[00:53:15] [SPEAKER_03]: the stuff they can't figure out

[00:53:18] [SPEAKER_03]: because they don't know how to sell it

[00:53:20] [SPEAKER_03]: they don't know what to call it

[00:53:21] [SPEAKER_03]: they don't want to get screwed

[00:53:23] [SPEAKER_03]: by you know

[00:53:25] [SPEAKER_03]: by not selling it correctly

[00:53:27] [SPEAKER_03]: so they'll bring it to me

[00:53:29] [SPEAKER_03]: and you know

[00:53:32] [SPEAKER_03]: I'll end up

[00:53:33] [SPEAKER_03]: being the one trying to research it

[00:53:35] [SPEAKER_03]: and figure it out

[00:53:36] [SPEAKER_03]: so

[00:53:38] [SPEAKER_03]: not for them you know they just want to get out of it

[00:53:41] [SPEAKER_03]: they don't know what to do with it

[00:53:42] [SPEAKER_03]: they don't you know

[00:53:44] [SPEAKER_03]: it's nothing to them

[00:53:46] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah I have

[00:53:49] [SPEAKER_01]: I have some pieces like that

[00:53:51] [SPEAKER_01]: where I know

[00:53:52] [SPEAKER_01]: they're like

[00:53:54] [SPEAKER_01]: not junk but I don't know

[00:53:56] [SPEAKER_01]: what they are so they've just kind of been sitting

[00:53:58] [SPEAKER_01]: in a box

[00:54:00] [SPEAKER_01]: because

[00:54:01] [SPEAKER_01]: you know I don't have time to spend

[00:54:04] [SPEAKER_01]: hours upon hours to like do

[00:54:06] [SPEAKER_01]: the research but that's actually what I need to do

[00:54:09] [SPEAKER_01]: and the other thing

[00:54:10] [SPEAKER_03]: I'll tell you I sold a piece and I'm still kicking myself

[00:54:13] [SPEAKER_03]: really kicking myself

[00:54:14] [SPEAKER_03]: the other thing I sold

[00:54:16] [SPEAKER_03]: a Salvador Dali piece

[00:54:19] [SPEAKER_03]: and if you have

[00:54:20] [SPEAKER_03]: a book piece

[00:54:21] [SPEAKER_03]: if you have a piece that was featured in a book

[00:54:24] [SPEAKER_03]: it's worth like five times what

[00:54:26] [SPEAKER_03]: it normally would sell for

[00:54:28] [SPEAKER_03]: because it's a book piece

[00:54:29] [SPEAKER_01]: now when you say book piece you mean in

[00:54:32] [SPEAKER_01]: like a reference book like in a jewelry

[00:54:34] [SPEAKER_03]: somebody who wrote a book on

[00:54:36] [SPEAKER_03]: costume jewelry and okay

[00:54:37] [SPEAKER_03]: out this year I paid $200

[00:54:40] [SPEAKER_03]: for the book first picture in the

[00:54:42] [SPEAKER_03]: book was my Salvador Dali

[00:54:43] [SPEAKER_03]: I sold for $300 that's now worth

[00:54:46] [SPEAKER_03]: couple of thousand

[00:54:48] [SPEAKER_03]: because at the time I knew

[00:54:50] [SPEAKER_03]: nothing about it nobody had it

[00:54:52] [SPEAKER_03]: I knew it was a Salvador

[00:54:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Dali piece I thought I did good

[00:54:56] [SPEAKER_03]: to get a few hundred dollars for it

[00:54:57] [SPEAKER_03]: who would have dreamed

[00:54:59] [SPEAKER_03]: it was that special

[00:55:01] [SPEAKER_01]: and I yes and that you would actually

[00:55:03] [SPEAKER_01]: come across it in a book

[00:55:05] [SPEAKER_01]: like right what are the odds

[00:55:07] [SPEAKER_01]: exactly so that's why

[00:55:09] [SPEAKER_03]: I say if you can really learn

[00:55:11] [SPEAKER_03]: one

[00:55:14] [SPEAKER_03]: area specialty

[00:55:16] [SPEAKER_03]: and become

[00:55:17] [SPEAKER_03]: proficient before you move to the next

[00:55:20] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm not saying don't learn about everything

[00:55:22] [SPEAKER_03]: if you like everything learn it please

[00:55:25] [SPEAKER_03]: believe me

[00:55:26] [SPEAKER_03]: when I tell you

[00:55:27] [SPEAKER_03]: I wish I was a gemologist

[00:55:30] [SPEAKER_03]: I wish

[00:55:31] [SPEAKER_03]: I would have because even today

[00:55:34] [SPEAKER_03]: as much as I know

[00:55:35] [SPEAKER_03]: I still go see a gemologist

[00:55:37] [SPEAKER_03]: because I know what it is but

[00:55:39] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know

[00:55:43] [SPEAKER_03]: really

[00:55:45] [SPEAKER_03]: so I take

[00:55:46] [SPEAKER_03]: it I go I spend it I spend

[00:55:48] [SPEAKER_03]: like four hours once a month

[00:55:49] [SPEAKER_03]: I bring in a hundred pieces

[00:55:51] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't get a full appraisal

[00:55:53] [SPEAKER_03]: he'll just tell me what the carrot is

[00:55:56] [SPEAKER_03]: what the metal is blah blah blah

[00:55:57] [SPEAKER_03]: really quick so in four hours

[00:55:59] [SPEAKER_03]: we get through a hundred pieces

[00:56:02] [SPEAKER_03]: and I pay them by the hour

[00:56:04] [SPEAKER_03]: and for me a good investment

[00:56:06] [SPEAKER_03]: because then

[00:56:07] [SPEAKER_03]: I take everything in these little bags

[00:56:10] [SPEAKER_03]: in the little bags

[00:56:12] [SPEAKER_03]: and on the bag when he gives it back

[00:56:13] [SPEAKER_03]: I write okay it's

[00:56:16] [SPEAKER_03]: full cut

[00:56:16] [SPEAKER_03]: six point diamond

[00:56:18] [SPEAKER_03]: he'll tell me retail and then I'll sell it for less

[00:56:22] [SPEAKER_03]: you know

[00:56:23] [SPEAKER_03]: but at least I know what replacing it would be

[00:56:27] [SPEAKER_03]: so

[00:56:29] [SPEAKER_03]: it's small things like that

[00:56:32] [SPEAKER_03]: that will help you

[00:56:35] [SPEAKER_03]: and there's antique

[00:56:37] [SPEAKER_03]: places here there's auction houses

[00:56:39] [SPEAKER_03]: that on Tuesdays

[00:56:42] [SPEAKER_03]: they do free they'll tell you

[00:56:43] [SPEAKER_03]: what your what it's worth if you're going to sell it

[00:56:45] [SPEAKER_03]: in the auction so you could bring things in on Tuesday

[00:56:48] [SPEAKER_03]: and

[00:56:49] [SPEAKER_03]: they'll tell you what they think it'll fetch

[00:56:50] [SPEAKER_03]: and then if you want to sell it you leave it with them

[00:56:54] [SPEAKER_03]: now

[00:56:54] [SPEAKER_03]: just to find out what it's worth and you never

[00:56:57] [SPEAKER_03]: leave them pieces they're going to stop helping

[00:56:59] [SPEAKER_03]: you

[00:57:01] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm not going to want to tell you if you do that a lot

[00:57:03] [SPEAKER_03]: but you know

[00:57:05] [SPEAKER_03]: if you have a relationship if you buy

[00:57:07] [SPEAKER_03]: from an auction house

[00:57:08] [SPEAKER_03]: and you already have a relationship because you're already

[00:57:11] [SPEAKER_03]: buying and you come across

[00:57:13] [SPEAKER_03]: something always you know ask

[00:57:15] [SPEAKER_03]: them there's nothing wrong with asking other people

[00:57:19] [SPEAKER_03]: what their opinion of it is or

[00:57:21] [SPEAKER_03]: what um

[00:57:22] [SPEAKER_03]: I have people all the time asked

[00:57:25] [SPEAKER_03]: me

[00:57:26] [SPEAKER_03]: what do you think I should charge what is this I have

[00:57:29] [SPEAKER_03]: people who text me pictures all the time

[00:57:31] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah CJ told me that he always

[00:57:33] [SPEAKER_01]: asks you

[00:57:34] [SPEAKER_01]: he always asks you about stuff

[00:57:36] [SPEAKER_03]: I had a customer who used to buy from me

[00:57:39] [SPEAKER_03]: right I have sailed her

[00:57:41] [SPEAKER_03]: a lot of stuff

[00:57:43] [SPEAKER_03]: well she got

[00:57:45] [SPEAKER_03]: mad when

[00:57:46] [SPEAKER_03]: the people that work for me put me on like

[00:57:49] [SPEAKER_03]: TikTok and YouTube because

[00:57:51] [SPEAKER_03]: she wanted me to be her little secret

[00:57:53] [SPEAKER_03]: well that's

[00:57:54] [SPEAKER_03]: not a business for me

[00:57:57] [SPEAKER_03]: and then the

[00:57:59] [SPEAKER_03]: 100% opposite is somebody like CJ

[00:58:01] [SPEAKER_03]: and the way I met him is

[00:58:03] [SPEAKER_03]: he had come into my store I had four

[00:58:05] [SPEAKER_03]: stores at the time he came into

[00:58:07] [SPEAKER_03]: the store and Matt now

[00:58:09] [SPEAKER_03]: and he did a video

[00:58:11] [SPEAKER_03]: and him and the guy I had

[00:58:13] [SPEAKER_03]: running the store got along

[00:58:15] [SPEAKER_03]: and talked and you know they called

[00:58:17] [SPEAKER_03]: me and said oh this guy came in he's on

[00:58:19] [SPEAKER_03]: YouTube he did a video blah blah blah

[00:58:21] [SPEAKER_03]: and we gave him your card to come

[00:58:23] [SPEAKER_03]: see the warehouse because this is

[00:58:25] [SPEAKER_03]: 4,000 square feet that my warehouse

[00:58:27] [SPEAKER_03]: was 8,000 square feet

[00:58:29] [SPEAKER_03]: but he's so generous

[00:58:31] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah he is

[00:58:33] [SPEAKER_03]: and if you share your

[00:58:35] [SPEAKER_03]: knowledge

[00:58:37] [SPEAKER_03]: it doesn't take away from what anybody

[00:58:39] [SPEAKER_03]: else knows if you help

[00:58:41] [SPEAKER_03]: you know if you're kind and you're

[00:58:42] [SPEAKER_03]: generously back

[00:58:44] [SPEAKER_03]: if you don't want people to know what they

[00:58:46] [SPEAKER_03]: have because in some work sense

[00:58:48] [SPEAKER_03]: you think that it takes away from what

[00:58:50] [SPEAKER_03]: you're doing it doesn't

[00:58:52] [SPEAKER_03]: there's so much room for all of us

[00:58:55] [SPEAKER_03]: it's not a competition

[00:58:57] [SPEAKER_03]: and we all get the stuff

[00:58:59] [SPEAKER_03]: it's just if you

[00:59:01] [SPEAKER_03]: love it and you want to talk about it

[00:59:03] [SPEAKER_03]: and you enjoy it

[00:59:05] [SPEAKER_03]: be generous with what you've

[00:59:07] [SPEAKER_03]: learned

[00:59:08] [SPEAKER_01]: don't be stingy

[00:59:10] [SPEAKER_01]: yes yes that's the whole

[00:59:12] [SPEAKER_01]: purpose of this podcast

[00:59:14] [SPEAKER_01]: because I felt there was

[00:59:16] [SPEAKER_01]: just

[00:59:18] [SPEAKER_01]: no place for people

[00:59:20] [SPEAKER_01]: who love jewelry and resale

[00:59:22] [SPEAKER_01]: jewelry to get basic

[00:59:24] [SPEAKER_01]: information or for us to share

[00:59:26] [SPEAKER_01]: and have discussions about it

[00:59:28] [SPEAKER_03]: well who don't want you to know what they know

[00:59:30] [SPEAKER_03]: I was telling my husband

[00:59:32] [SPEAKER_03]: you know that

[00:59:34] [SPEAKER_03]: I was going to tell you about putting away

[00:59:36] [SPEAKER_03]: designers now for later

[00:59:39] [SPEAKER_03]: because you guys are young

[00:59:40] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm you know in my 60s

[00:59:42] [SPEAKER_03]: if I would have thought about this

[00:59:44] [SPEAKER_03]: 40 years ago if I would have known about

[00:59:46] [SPEAKER_03]: the internet believe me when I tell you

[00:59:48] [SPEAKER_03]: I would have put away

[00:59:50] [SPEAKER_03]: my retirement in

[00:59:52] [SPEAKER_03]: pieces that I knew would be worth

[00:59:54] [SPEAKER_03]: money but

[00:59:56] [SPEAKER_03]: you only know what you know

[00:59:58] [SPEAKER_03]: and he's like oh my god don't tell him

[01:00:00] [SPEAKER_03]: then they're going to start buying it and I'm like

[01:00:02] [SPEAKER_03]: honey

[01:00:03] [SPEAKER_03]: this is

[01:00:05] [SPEAKER_03]: something everybody can know

[01:00:07] [SPEAKER_03]: it's not

[01:00:10] [SPEAKER_03]: it doesn't take away

[01:00:12] [SPEAKER_03]: from anything I do it's not like you

[01:00:14] [SPEAKER_03]: and I are shopping and I'm trying to hide from you

[01:00:15] [SPEAKER_03]: what I'm getting

[01:00:17] [SPEAKER_03]: if you want you to know what I'm doing

[01:00:19] [SPEAKER_03]: and why I'm doing it

[01:00:21] [SPEAKER_03]: I want to know what you're doing

[01:00:23] [SPEAKER_03]: because it helps

[01:00:26] [SPEAKER_03]: me learn and understand

[01:00:29] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah and the one thing

[01:00:30] [SPEAKER_01]: I've learned too about jewelry

[01:00:32] [SPEAKER_01]: because I've had this happen many

[01:00:34] [SPEAKER_01]: times I will go to a yard sale

[01:00:36] [SPEAKER_01]: in a state sale a thrift store

[01:00:38] [SPEAKER_01]: and there'll be four or five

[01:00:40] [SPEAKER_01]: six of us all going to the jewelry

[01:00:41] [SPEAKER_01]: but surprisingly we're not all

[01:00:44] [SPEAKER_01]: looking and you know picking out

[01:00:46] [SPEAKER_01]: the same pieces maybe it happens

[01:00:48] [SPEAKER_01]: a few times but there's some people

[01:00:50] [SPEAKER_01]: who are just looking for gold and silver

[01:00:52] [SPEAKER_01]: there's some of us who are just looking for vintage

[01:00:54] [SPEAKER_01]: there's some of us who are just looking for the more

[01:00:56] [SPEAKER_01]: modern pieces and the funny

[01:00:58] [SPEAKER_03]: thing is my bad

[01:00:59] [SPEAKER_03]: wars that bracelet I told you about

[01:01:02] [SPEAKER_03]: the coin bracelet I bought

[01:01:04] [SPEAKER_03]: it on a Sunday the

[01:01:06] [SPEAKER_03]: sale had been going since Thursday

[01:01:08] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't get out

[01:01:10] [SPEAKER_03]: till Sunday

[01:01:12] [SPEAKER_03]: and I found

[01:01:15] [SPEAKER_03]: you know a $5,000

[01:01:16] [SPEAKER_03]: bracelet for two dollars

[01:01:18] [SPEAKER_01]: yes everyone before you passed

[01:01:20] [SPEAKER_01]: passed over so

[01:01:21] [SPEAKER_03]: I picked up an Italian

[01:01:23] [SPEAKER_03]: ring that was 18 carat

[01:01:25] [SPEAKER_03]: and it was

[01:01:27] [SPEAKER_03]: an inch

[01:01:30] [SPEAKER_03]: aquamarine

[01:01:31] [SPEAKER_03]: and

[01:01:33] [SPEAKER_03]: it was a Sunday it was late on Sunday

[01:01:35] [SPEAKER_03]: he was done he was over it

[01:01:37] [SPEAKER_03]: I put it on my finger

[01:01:39] [SPEAKER_03]: it didn't even come up over this little

[01:01:41] [SPEAKER_03]: knuckle and I did my little shopping

[01:01:43] [SPEAKER_03]: and then I was like oh and I picked this up too

[01:01:45] [SPEAKER_03]: you know it's Sunday I never think

[01:01:46] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm going to get anything good on Sunday I'll be honest with you

[01:01:49] [SPEAKER_03]: because there are people who go first thing

[01:01:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Friday morning

[01:01:52] [SPEAKER_03]: waiting at the door to get all the jewelry

[01:01:55] [SPEAKER_03]: so he said oh it's

[01:01:57] [SPEAKER_03]: 50 cents because it was a size

[01:01:59] [SPEAKER_03]: 3 and a half it ended up being

[01:02:01] [SPEAKER_03]: an Appalada an Italian brand

[01:02:02] [SPEAKER_03]: that was a $4,000 ring I sold

[01:02:05] [SPEAKER_03]: it for $1,000 because I didn't know anybody

[01:02:07] [SPEAKER_03]: who could wear a 3 and a half

[01:02:08] [SPEAKER_03]: and she loved jewelry

[01:02:11] [SPEAKER_03]: and she was a very good negotiator

[01:02:13] [SPEAKER_03]: and I wasn't

[01:02:15] [SPEAKER_03]: but it was a beautiful piece

[01:02:17] [SPEAKER_03]: so my my thing is

[01:02:20] [SPEAKER_03]: if you go thinking

[01:02:22] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm only going to buy this because I want to resell it

[01:02:25] [SPEAKER_03]: and I'm getting it you're closing yourself

[01:02:27] [SPEAKER_03]: off to other things that are out there

[01:02:29] [SPEAKER_01]: you know true

[01:02:33] [SPEAKER_03]: if it's in your price range

[01:02:34] [SPEAKER_03]: if it speaks to you if you love it then it

[01:02:36] [SPEAKER_03]: doesn't matter because if it's not worth

[01:02:38] [SPEAKER_03]: reselling it you love it you'll keep it

[01:02:41] [SPEAKER_03]: if it is worth reselling

[01:02:42] [SPEAKER_03]: if you pick up a $10 piece that you could

[01:02:44] [SPEAKER_03]: sell for $75 or $80

[01:02:46] [SPEAKER_03]: and you're happy doing that that's great

[01:02:50] [SPEAKER_03]: but if you bought it because you love it

[01:02:53] [SPEAKER_03]: you never mind wearing it

[01:02:54] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah and that's kind of what I've

[01:02:56] [SPEAKER_01]: I've done too where sometimes

[01:02:58] [SPEAKER_01]: I'll buy a piece

[01:03:00] [SPEAKER_01]: that I like and maybe I'll enjoy it

[01:03:02] [SPEAKER_01]: for a little while before I decide

[01:03:04] [SPEAKER_01]: to sell it I do that all the time

[01:03:06] [SPEAKER_01]: like I know I'll sell it eventually

[01:03:08] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm just not selling it right now

[01:03:10] [SPEAKER_03]: or as I like to tell people

[01:03:12] [SPEAKER_03]: everything's for sale

[01:03:13] [SPEAKER_03]: you know

[01:03:16] [SPEAKER_03]: it doesn't mean it's not for sale

[01:03:18] [SPEAKER_03]: it just means that

[01:03:19] [SPEAKER_03]: you know I'm not it's not selling

[01:03:22] [SPEAKER_03]: today because I'm wearing it

[01:03:24] [SPEAKER_03]: but

[01:03:25] [SPEAKER_03]: it's yes yes

[01:03:27] [SPEAKER_03]: should be fun

[01:03:28] [SPEAKER_03]: I agree

[01:03:30] [SPEAKER_03]: this should be fun

[01:03:32] [SPEAKER_03]: this should be

[01:03:34] [SPEAKER_03]: it's not a race it's not a fight

[01:03:37] [SPEAKER_03]: you're not you know

[01:03:38] [SPEAKER_03]: it should be something you do

[01:03:40] [SPEAKER_03]: with love

[01:03:42] [SPEAKER_03]: and because you love it

[01:03:44] [SPEAKER_03]: and you enjoy it and you want to learn about it

[01:03:46] [SPEAKER_03]: if not just go to K's Jewelers

[01:03:49] [SPEAKER_03]: and be a jeweler at one of the little jewelry stores

[01:03:51] [SPEAKER_03]: if you like jewelry

[01:03:52] [SPEAKER_03]: but you're not going to learn about it

[01:03:54] [SPEAKER_03]: or you don't

[01:03:57] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah

[01:03:59] [SPEAKER_01]: alright Lori

[01:04:00] [SPEAKER_01]: well before I let you go

[01:04:02] [SPEAKER_01]: how can people find you

[01:04:04] [SPEAKER_01]: or how can they connect with you

[01:04:06] [SPEAKER_01]: because I know I'll get some questions about that

[01:04:08] [SPEAKER_03]: well

[01:04:10] [SPEAKER_03]: and if my

[01:04:13] [SPEAKER_03]: stores online

[01:04:14] [SPEAKER_03]: are my

[01:04:16] [SPEAKER_03]: E the letter E and the letter Z

[01:04:18] [SPEAKER_03]: my easy vintage

[01:04:20] [SPEAKER_03]: and I'll tell you what I'll write it real quick too

[01:04:22] [SPEAKER_03]: because

[01:04:24] [SPEAKER_01]: just a bit yeah because I put your name up

[01:04:26] [SPEAKER_01]: so it's my easy vintage

[01:04:29] [SPEAKER_01]: and this is

[01:04:30] [SPEAKER_01]: my

[01:04:34] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm on eBay, Depop, Poshmark, Grilled

[01:04:38] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm on like

[01:04:39] [SPEAKER_03]: eight sites

[01:04:41] [SPEAKER_03]: is that showing

[01:04:43] [SPEAKER_01]: yes yes yes

[01:04:44] [SPEAKER_01]: like I said I have it on your name too

[01:04:46] [SPEAKER_01]: like the little banner

[01:04:49] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't mind giving people my number

[01:04:52] [SPEAKER_03]: and if they have questions

[01:04:54] [SPEAKER_03]: or they want any information

[01:04:57] [SPEAKER_03]: or if they're coming to St. Petersburg

[01:04:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Florida

[01:05:00] [SPEAKER_03]: or they want to get a hold of me

[01:05:02] [SPEAKER_03]: if you're good with me

[01:05:03] [SPEAKER_03]: you could put my contact out there

[01:05:05] [SPEAKER_03]: I have no problem with it

[01:05:07] [SPEAKER_01]: oh yeah yeah if you want to

[01:05:09] [SPEAKER_01]: like after we end the recording

[01:05:11] [SPEAKER_01]: just let me know and I'll put it in the description

[01:05:13] [SPEAKER_01]: in case someone wants to reach out

[01:05:15] [SPEAKER_03]: that you called on

[01:05:16] [SPEAKER_03]: if somebody wants to reach out

[01:05:18] [SPEAKER_03]: if they have a question

[01:05:20] [SPEAKER_03]: or I had somebody this morning

[01:05:23] [SPEAKER_03]: who reached out through one of my stores

[01:05:25] [SPEAKER_03]: because they wanted to know

[01:05:27] [SPEAKER_03]: what gem tester I used

[01:05:29] [SPEAKER_03]: and what goal tester I used

[01:05:31] [SPEAKER_03]: and where I got it

[01:05:32] [SPEAKER_03]: and I left because

[01:05:35] [SPEAKER_03]: the thing that

[01:05:37] [SPEAKER_03]: these are good tools

[01:05:40] [SPEAKER_03]: but they're just tools

[01:05:41] [SPEAKER_03]: right a goal tester

[01:05:44] [SPEAKER_03]: it will

[01:05:46] [SPEAKER_03]: read gold even if it's plated

[01:05:48] [SPEAKER_03]: so then I still have to

[01:05:51] [SPEAKER_03]: turn around and use my chemicals

[01:05:52] [SPEAKER_03]: to figure it out

[01:05:54] [SPEAKER_03]: okay and then my gem

[01:05:56] [SPEAKER_03]: tester will give you

[01:05:58] [SPEAKER_03]: so it will tell you

[01:06:00] [SPEAKER_03]: it could be Jade, Iolite, Aqua, Emerald or Amethyst

[01:06:04] [SPEAKER_03]: but you almost have to know

[01:06:06] [SPEAKER_03]: so use those as tools

[01:06:09] [SPEAKER_03]: but in addition

[01:06:10] [SPEAKER_03]: to those tools

[01:06:11] [SPEAKER_03]: I use

[01:06:14] [SPEAKER_03]: my stone identification sheets

[01:06:16] [SPEAKER_03]: and then

[01:06:19] [SPEAKER_03]: I use books

[01:06:21] [SPEAKER_03]: and the other thing I do is I make notes

[01:06:23] [SPEAKER_03]: this is the most important thing

[01:06:25] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm going to leave you with

[01:06:27] [SPEAKER_03]: if you find

[01:06:31] [SPEAKER_03]: a maker's mark

[01:06:33] [SPEAKER_03]: write it down

[01:06:35] [SPEAKER_03]: because I have looked up the same maker's mark

[01:06:38] [SPEAKER_03]: 50 times because I'm not that smart

[01:06:40] [SPEAKER_03]: I've done that too

[01:06:41] [SPEAKER_03]: if you find a maker's mark

[01:06:44] [SPEAKER_03]: keep a little book

[01:06:45] [SPEAKER_03]: I used to keep a phone book

[01:06:47] [SPEAKER_03]: it's grown to a filing cabinet

[01:06:49] [SPEAKER_03]: but you know it's like I told you

[01:06:51] [SPEAKER_03]: knowledge is power

[01:06:53] [SPEAKER_03]: I tell my husband all the time

[01:06:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Thilpata has a very

[01:06:57] [SPEAKER_03]: weird mark

[01:06:58] [SPEAKER_03]: but once you learn their mark

[01:07:01] [SPEAKER_03]: you'll always know

[01:07:04] [SPEAKER_03]: you'll know it's silver

[01:07:05] [SPEAKER_03]: they only did silver

[01:07:06] [SPEAKER_03]: they only did sterling

[01:07:09] [SPEAKER_03]: so when you see that little mark

[01:07:11] [SPEAKER_03]: I bought a lot of jewelry

[01:07:13] [SPEAKER_03]: that wasn't obviously marked

[01:07:15] [SPEAKER_03]: but I saw Thilpata's mark

[01:07:17] [SPEAKER_03]: and knew that they only do silver

[01:07:20] [SPEAKER_03]: so it's those

[01:07:21] [SPEAKER_03]: keep a book, write it down

[01:07:23] [SPEAKER_03]: if you want to not look up

[01:07:27] [SPEAKER_03]: the same thing a hundred times

[01:07:28] [SPEAKER_03]: like I do

[01:07:29] [SPEAKER_03]: also with a lot of the Mexican

[01:07:32] [SPEAKER_03]: and native marks

[01:07:33] [SPEAKER_03]: those are really hard

[01:07:36] [SPEAKER_01]: they're really hard

[01:07:37] [SPEAKER_03]: and I have books and books and books

[01:07:38] [SPEAKER_03]: and study, study, study

[01:07:39] [SPEAKER_03]: and I still will go to the Native American groups online

[01:07:43] [SPEAKER_03]: and say hey guys

[01:07:44] [SPEAKER_03]: anybody recognize this

[01:07:45] [SPEAKER_03]: and that's where those resources become amazing

[01:07:49] [SPEAKER_03]: and then share your knowledge

[01:07:50] [SPEAKER_03]: if you learn something

[01:07:52] [SPEAKER_03]: somebody else doesn't know

[01:07:54] [SPEAKER_03]: help the next person

[01:07:56] [SPEAKER_03]: always pay it forward

[01:07:58] [SPEAKER_03]: have a handout

[01:08:00] [SPEAKER_03]: it doesn't

[01:08:01] [SPEAKER_03]: take away from anything you're doing

[01:08:04] [SPEAKER_03]: and always be honest about what you're selling

[01:08:07] [SPEAKER_03]: the biggest thing

[01:08:08] [SPEAKER_03]: if you're selling

[01:08:10] [SPEAKER_03]: is a lot of times

[01:08:11] [SPEAKER_03]: you don't want to point out a flaw

[01:08:14] [SPEAKER_03]: it's in your pictures

[01:08:16] [SPEAKER_03]: but you don't bring it to their attention

[01:08:18] [SPEAKER_03]: it's in your pictures

[01:08:19] [SPEAKER_03]: and you may have a disclaimer

[01:08:21] [SPEAKER_03]: look really good at the pictures

[01:08:24] [SPEAKER_03]: but you know the flaw is there

[01:08:26] [SPEAKER_03]: I always point out the flaw

[01:08:27] [SPEAKER_01]: I always do too because I don't want

[01:08:30] [SPEAKER_01]: anybody being surprised

[01:08:32] [SPEAKER_01]: or feeling like I

[01:08:34] [SPEAKER_01]: scam them or anything like that

[01:08:36] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm always very, very

[01:08:38] [SPEAKER_01]: upfront

[01:08:40] [SPEAKER_01]: something's wrong or missing

[01:08:42] [SPEAKER_01]: or broken whatever the case may be

[01:08:44] [SPEAKER_03]: I sold a copy of an Atosha coin

[01:08:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Atosha is the

[01:08:48] [SPEAKER_03]: the ship that went down here off the coast of Florida

[01:08:51] [SPEAKER_03]: and there's lots and lots and lots of

[01:08:54] [SPEAKER_03]: both coins out there that are being sold as real

[01:08:57] [SPEAKER_03]: I sold

[01:08:58] [SPEAKER_03]: a fake coin

[01:09:00] [SPEAKER_03]: the description

[01:09:02] [SPEAKER_03]: was

[01:09:04] [SPEAKER_03]: foe atosha coin

[01:09:06] [SPEAKER_03]: foe atosha coin

[01:09:08] [SPEAKER_03]: it's in the description

[01:09:10] [SPEAKER_03]: it's the title

[01:09:12] [SPEAKER_03]: I had a guy buy it and then tell me

[01:09:14] [SPEAKER_03]: you know that's not real

[01:09:16] [SPEAKER_03]: of course it's not real why do you think it says

[01:09:19] [SPEAKER_03]: foe

[01:09:20] [SPEAKER_01]: oh my gosh

[01:09:24] [SPEAKER_03]: if it was real it's two to three thousand

[01:09:26] [SPEAKER_03]: dollars not ninety bucks did you think

[01:09:28] [SPEAKER_03]: it was gold filled

[01:09:30] I

[01:09:32] [SPEAKER_03]: how you this and if you

[01:09:34] [SPEAKER_03]: are still not sure

[01:09:36] [SPEAKER_03]: asked people would much rather you

[01:09:38] [SPEAKER_03]: ask upfront then buy

[01:09:40] [SPEAKER_03]: it and then not be happy with it or give them

[01:09:42] [SPEAKER_03]: bad feedback

[01:09:44] [SPEAKER_03]: when you have to do your own due diligence

[01:09:46] [SPEAKER_03]: I bought

[01:09:47] [SPEAKER_03]: any of the things I've been disappointed in

[01:09:50] [SPEAKER_03]: and I went back and looked at the pictures

[01:09:53] [SPEAKER_03]: and the flaw was in the pictures

[01:09:54] [SPEAKER_03]: and it was my fault for not looking well

[01:09:56] [SPEAKER_03]: they didn't point it out

[01:09:58] [SPEAKER_03]: but that's on me because I should

[01:10:00] [SPEAKER_03]: do my due diligence not expect you

[01:10:03] [SPEAKER_03]: to but I will tell you

[01:10:04] [SPEAKER_03]: the more honest you are people will appreciate it

[01:10:06] [SPEAKER_03]: and they'll want to come back

[01:10:08] [SPEAKER_03]: and buy from you again and they'll build a report

[01:10:10] [SPEAKER_03]: with you

[01:10:11] [SPEAKER_03]: if you screw somebody once they may not

[01:10:14] [SPEAKER_03]: know it the first few times but eventually

[01:10:16] [SPEAKER_03]: they're going to find out and they're never going to buy from you again

[01:10:18] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah and the other

[01:10:20] [SPEAKER_01]: thing I've learned too is like

[01:10:22] [SPEAKER_01]: I always disclose the flaws

[01:10:24] [SPEAKER_01]: because to some people

[01:10:26] [SPEAKER_01]: they're not flaws

[01:10:28] [SPEAKER_01]: exactly

[01:10:30] [SPEAKER_01]: I learned that

[01:10:32] [SPEAKER_03]: I had one of my employees say

[01:10:34] [SPEAKER_03]: hey mama you know this is missing a stone

[01:10:37] [SPEAKER_03]: I said I know

[01:10:37] [SPEAKER_03]: and I said but if you go into eBay

[01:10:40] [SPEAKER_03]: and you look the same

[01:10:42] [SPEAKER_03]: brooch sold missing stones

[01:10:44] [SPEAKER_03]: for $600

[01:10:45] [SPEAKER_03]: people want the original

[01:10:47] [SPEAKER_03]: because he wanted to put a stone in

[01:10:49] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm like no no no no no

[01:10:52] [SPEAKER_03]: I'll give the option

[01:10:53] [SPEAKER_03]: in my website would you like me to clean it

[01:10:56] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't automatically clean

[01:10:58] [SPEAKER_03]: old jewelry a lot of people

[01:10:59] [SPEAKER_03]: buy something because they want to see that age

[01:11:02] [SPEAKER_03]: they want to see the patina

[01:11:04] [SPEAKER_03]: they want to see

[01:11:06] [SPEAKER_03]: so while in our description

[01:11:08] [SPEAKER_03]: if you'd like this piece clean please

[01:11:09] [SPEAKER_03]: let us know we don't mind cleaning it before we ship it

[01:11:12] [SPEAKER_02]: but

[01:11:13] [SPEAKER_03]: once you clean it somebody

[01:11:15] [SPEAKER_03]: who wanted it dirty is not going to buy it

[01:11:17] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah

[01:11:19] [SPEAKER_03]: the original and the

[01:11:21] [SPEAKER_03]: condition prior

[01:11:23] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah yeah like I

[01:11:25] [SPEAKER_01]: had sold something where

[01:11:27] [SPEAKER_01]: one of the stones

[01:11:29] [SPEAKER_01]: or beads on it had like a mark

[01:11:31] [SPEAKER_01]: on it and I don't know if it was something wrong

[01:11:33] [SPEAKER_01]: if somebody got ink on it or whatever

[01:11:35] [SPEAKER_01]: and the lady was like

[01:11:37] [SPEAKER_01]: that's not even an issue

[01:11:38] [SPEAKER_01]: she was just so excited about the piece

[01:11:41] [SPEAKER_01]: she didn't care that one of the beads

[01:11:43] [SPEAKER_01]: had something wrong with it

[01:11:45] [SPEAKER_01]: she didn't care she thought it was beautiful

[01:11:47] [SPEAKER_01]: even with that discrepancy

[01:11:49] [SPEAKER_03]: but like you said

[01:11:51] [SPEAKER_03]: sometimes flaws are not flaws

[01:11:53] [SPEAKER_03]: mm-hmm but I will tell

[01:11:55] [SPEAKER_03]: you something I have this

[01:11:57] [SPEAKER_03]: piece that

[01:11:58] [SPEAKER_03]: I actually need to contact a museum about

[01:12:01] [SPEAKER_03]: but I had two sets of it

[01:12:03] [SPEAKER_03]: and one set I sold for like

[01:12:05] [SPEAKER_03]: $150 I didn't realize

[01:12:07] [SPEAKER_03]: that what I thought was a mark was actually a signature

[01:12:10] [SPEAKER_03]: so be

[01:12:11] [SPEAKER_03]: really careful and then

[01:12:13] [SPEAKER_03]: when I on the second set

[01:12:15] [SPEAKER_03]: I found it in a book

[01:12:17] [SPEAKER_03]: and it was a book of museum pieces

[01:12:19] [SPEAKER_03]: and that's when I realized I sold

[01:12:21] [SPEAKER_03]: one of the sets for $150

[01:12:22] [SPEAKER_03]: when they're worth a couple of thousand

[01:12:25] [SPEAKER_03]: but learn mistakes

[01:12:27] [SPEAKER_03]: you're always going to make stuff like that

[01:12:29] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah yeah I've

[01:12:30] [SPEAKER_01]: made my share and I probably

[01:12:33] [SPEAKER_01]: we all do

[01:12:34] [SPEAKER_01]: will continue to make mistakes

[01:12:37] [SPEAKER_03]: every day

[01:12:38] [SPEAKER_03]: but the thing is like I said

[01:12:40] [SPEAKER_03]: if you come across a unique mark

[01:12:42] [SPEAKER_03]: write it down file it somewhere

[01:12:45] [SPEAKER_03]: come up with a system for

[01:12:47] [SPEAKER_03]: keeping it

[01:12:49] [SPEAKER_03]: those are things nobody's going to tell you

[01:12:51] [SPEAKER_01]: nobody's going to do this

[01:12:53] [SPEAKER_03]: and even

[01:12:55] [SPEAKER_01]: it's easier now because you can take a picture with your phone

[01:12:57] [SPEAKER_01]: save it

[01:12:58] [SPEAKER_01]: and then put it in a folder on your computer

[01:13:01] [SPEAKER_01]: or something

[01:13:02] [SPEAKER_03]: or even just on your phone book

[01:13:04] [SPEAKER_01]: or on your phone yeah

[01:13:06] [SPEAKER_03]: and that's something I was going to say too

[01:13:09] [SPEAKER_03]: the last thing I'll tell you is

[01:13:11] [SPEAKER_03]: if you have a pro

[01:13:13] [SPEAKER_03]: which is three pieces of a set

[01:13:15] [SPEAKER_03]: okay

[01:13:16] [SPEAKER_03]: it's the set worth

[01:13:19] [SPEAKER_03]: five times what the individual pieces are

[01:13:21] [SPEAKER_03]: if you have

[01:13:23] [SPEAKER_03]: the original box it's worth 25%

[01:13:26] [SPEAKER_03]: more than selling

[01:13:27] [SPEAKER_03]: more

[01:13:28] [SPEAKER_03]: don't throw away original boxes

[01:13:31] [SPEAKER_03]: because that

[01:13:32] [SPEAKER_03]: identify the piece

[01:13:34] [SPEAKER_03]: even if it's damaged

[01:13:38] [SPEAKER_03]: that goes

[01:13:39] [SPEAKER_03]: into

[01:13:41] [SPEAKER_03]: money back

[01:13:43] [SPEAKER_03]: people with the original packaging

[01:13:45] [SPEAKER_03]: the original box

[01:13:46] [SPEAKER_03]: and then

[01:13:48] [SPEAKER_03]: like

[01:13:50] [SPEAKER_03]: there's times I'll have a piece

[01:13:52] [SPEAKER_03]: and I'll see four or five people are selling it

[01:13:54] [SPEAKER_03]: and I'll put it away

[01:13:56] [SPEAKER_03]: and then

[01:13:57] [SPEAKER_03]: I'll shop for the earrings or the ring to go with it

[01:14:00] [SPEAKER_03]: then I have a set

[01:14:02] [SPEAKER_03]: nobody has a set

[01:14:04] [SPEAKER_03]: nobody has the three pieces

[01:14:06] [SPEAKER_03]: so then mine jumps to the top

[01:14:09] [SPEAKER_03]: because people

[01:14:10] [SPEAKER_03]: want the set

[01:14:12] [SPEAKER_03]: so they're not hunting

[01:14:14] [SPEAKER_03]: right

[01:14:16] [SPEAKER_03]: so it's fun

[01:14:18] [SPEAKER_03]: you love it

[01:14:19] [SPEAKER_03]: it's a community of people who love it

[01:14:22] [SPEAKER_03]: find your tribe

[01:14:23] [SPEAKER_03]: you know

[01:14:25] [SPEAKER_03]: share the wealth, share the knowledge

[01:14:28] [SPEAKER_01]: alright well

[01:14:29] [SPEAKER_01]: you

[01:14:31] [SPEAKER_01]: I have learned so much Lorie

[01:14:33] [SPEAKER_01]: I really have

[01:14:34] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm so amazed

[01:14:35] [SPEAKER_03]: I know that we'll learn off each other

[01:14:39] [SPEAKER_03]: I think it'll be a very good relationship

[01:14:41] [SPEAKER_03]: and if you

[01:14:43] [SPEAKER_03]: or anybody

[01:14:44] [SPEAKER_03]: your followers need help or information

[01:14:47] [SPEAKER_03]: if I can help them

[01:14:49] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm more than happy to do it

[01:14:51] [SPEAKER_03]: do your research

[01:14:53] [SPEAKER_03]: you know Google Lens

[01:14:54] [SPEAKER_03]: it's going to be the pieces that you don't see out there

[01:14:57] [SPEAKER_03]: but those are the diamond in the rough

[01:14:59] [SPEAKER_03]: because

[01:15:00] [SPEAKER_03]: stumble across a piece and you can't find it anywhere

[01:15:04] [SPEAKER_03]: you may have

[01:15:05] [SPEAKER_03]: something really incredible

[01:15:06] [SPEAKER_03]: and just not know it

[01:15:10] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah, yeah

[01:15:11] [SPEAKER_01]: that's always that for me

[01:15:12] [SPEAKER_01]: that's what I'm hoping

[01:15:14] [SPEAKER_01]: oh absolutely

[01:15:18] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm

[01:15:18] [SPEAKER_01]: waiting for that day where I have something so miraculous

[01:15:22] [SPEAKER_01]: and I'm like oh my gosh

[01:15:23] [SPEAKER_01]: yes

[01:15:25] [SPEAKER_03]: a lot of people get frustrated

[01:15:27] [SPEAKER_03]: and they

[01:15:28] [SPEAKER_03]: you know they don't spend the time

[01:15:31] [SPEAKER_03]: and you know the other thing is

[01:15:32] [SPEAKER_03]: a lot of people who have something they don't care

[01:15:34] [SPEAKER_03]: they just want to get rid of it

[01:15:36] [SPEAKER_03]: their value

[01:15:37] [SPEAKER_03]: so when you're looking at eBay you don't have to be the lowest

[01:15:41] [SPEAKER_03]: I used to always think

[01:15:42] [SPEAKER_03]: I had to be the lowest

[01:15:44] [SPEAKER_03]: and I was listening to somebody

[01:15:46] [SPEAKER_03]: on a podcast who

[01:15:49] [SPEAKER_03]: actually said there was

[01:15:50] [SPEAKER_03]: a study done where people don't buy the lowest

[01:15:53] [SPEAKER_03]: they'll buy

[01:15:54] [SPEAKER_03]: the middle because they think there's something wrong with yours

[01:15:57] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah

[01:15:58] [SPEAKER_01]: and other times people don't necessarily

[01:16:00] [SPEAKER_01]: shop by price

[01:16:01] [SPEAKER_01]: some people shop by location

[01:16:04] [SPEAKER_01]: and they'll say oh this one

[01:16:06] [SPEAKER_01]: is closer to me so I'll get it faster

[01:16:09] [SPEAKER_01]: than if I bought it cheaper over here

[01:16:10] [SPEAKER_01]: that'll take maybe a week to get to me

[01:16:13] [SPEAKER_01]: and this one may get to me in a day or two

[01:16:14] [SPEAKER_01]: because I've had people tell me stuff

[01:16:16] [SPEAKER_01]: like that too they're like oh yeah

[01:16:18] [SPEAKER_01]: you know I'd rather buy from someone closer

[01:16:21] [SPEAKER_01]: because then that way I get it

[01:16:23] [SPEAKER_03]: quicker because you know

[01:16:24] [SPEAKER_03]: part of what you're selling is

[01:16:26] [SPEAKER_03]: that you're reputable you stand behind

[01:16:28] [SPEAKER_03]: your stuff you're not just

[01:16:30] [SPEAKER_03]: shipping

[01:16:31] [SPEAKER_03]: I

[01:16:35] [SPEAKER_03]: always take into account

[01:16:36] [SPEAKER_03]: what people think

[01:16:38] [SPEAKER_03]: I never want to mislead anybody

[01:16:40] [SPEAKER_03]: and just like here at the store

[01:16:42] [SPEAKER_03]: I tell people I stand behind everything I sell

[01:16:44] [SPEAKER_03]: if I misrepresented it bring it back

[01:16:46] [SPEAKER_03]: and I'll give you back whatever you paid for it

[01:16:48] [SPEAKER_03]: because it would have been an accident

[01:16:50] [SPEAKER_03]: not an on purpose because I

[01:16:52] [SPEAKER_03]: try

[01:16:53] [SPEAKER_03]: to get it right but do I

[01:16:56] [SPEAKER_03]: make mistakes

[01:16:58] [SPEAKER_01]: absolutely we all do

[01:16:59] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah oh yeah

[01:17:01] [SPEAKER_01]: we all do and we all will

[01:17:03] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah it's you know

[01:17:05] [SPEAKER_03]: it may not even be my mistake

[01:17:07] [SPEAKER_03]: it may be one of my employees

[01:17:09] [SPEAKER_03]: so I always say

[01:17:11] [SPEAKER_03]: if you know if there's an issue

[01:17:13] [SPEAKER_03]: always let me know I'm more than happy to make it right for you

[01:17:16] [SPEAKER_03]: so that's

[01:17:17] [SPEAKER_01]: and that's just I think

[01:17:19] [SPEAKER_01]: the core of good business you know

[01:17:21] [SPEAKER_01]: well it that's the core of

[01:17:23] [SPEAKER_01]: being in business because the

[01:17:25] [SPEAKER_03]: people who come and get people that are

[01:17:27] [SPEAKER_03]: just flashing the pans just

[01:17:29] [SPEAKER_03]: trying to sell it make a buck you know

[01:17:31] [SPEAKER_03]: I've been let me tell you

[01:17:32] [SPEAKER_03]: I have a bracelet and I only

[01:17:34] [SPEAKER_03]: wear it because it's my

[01:17:36] [SPEAKER_03]: don't trust people bracelet

[01:17:37] [SPEAKER_03]: I had a lady screw me and I believed

[01:17:40] [SPEAKER_03]: her because

[01:17:43] [SPEAKER_03]: I just believed

[01:17:44] [SPEAKER_03]: her she said it was worth this

[01:17:46] [SPEAKER_03]: I couldn't find it anywhere

[01:17:48] [SPEAKER_03]: I wasn't familiar with that

[01:17:50] [SPEAKER_03]: I traded her a

[01:17:52] [SPEAKER_03]: bracelet that was worth twice what hers was

[01:17:54] [SPEAKER_03]: worth and gave her $500

[01:17:56] [SPEAKER_03]: because I bought what she said

[01:17:59] [SPEAKER_03]: oh it's this this this

[01:18:00] [SPEAKER_03]: I should it wasn't true

[01:18:02] [SPEAKER_03]: but don't ever come back to me

[01:18:04] [SPEAKER_03]: because I'll never buy from you again

[01:18:07] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah

[01:18:09] [SPEAKER_03]: you know if I can't trust you I don't

[01:18:10] [SPEAKER_03]: want to do business with you

[01:18:11] [SPEAKER_03]: I feel the same way

[01:18:13] [SPEAKER_03]: I think the business that much

[01:18:16] [SPEAKER_03]: and I don't want to be around people like that

[01:18:18] [SPEAKER_01]: yes and I go out of my

[01:18:20] [SPEAKER_01]: way to be honest and upfront

[01:18:23] [SPEAKER_01]: you know and and give a really

[01:18:24] [SPEAKER_01]: good customer experience so if someone

[01:18:27] [SPEAKER_01]: can't reciprocate that then

[01:18:28] [SPEAKER_03]: and that's yeah because

[01:18:30] [SPEAKER_03]: we're like that we expect everybody

[01:18:32] [SPEAKER_03]: to be like us and they're not

[01:18:34] [SPEAKER_03]: there's a lot of

[01:18:37] [SPEAKER_03]: shady people

[01:18:39] [SPEAKER_03]: you know

[01:18:40] [SPEAKER_03]: a lot of shady things

[01:18:42] [SPEAKER_03]: buy from somebody who's reputable

[01:18:44] [SPEAKER_03]: buy you know even if it's a little higher

[01:18:46] [SPEAKER_03]: and then don't you know people

[01:18:48] [SPEAKER_03]: make an offer tell me

[01:18:50] [SPEAKER_03]: why you want to pay that tell me why

[01:18:52] [SPEAKER_03]: you think it should be that because

[01:18:54] [SPEAKER_03]: if I work with you I'm going to I want

[01:18:56] [SPEAKER_03]: you to be happy I love what

[01:18:58] [SPEAKER_03]: I do I want you to get it and love it

[01:19:01] [SPEAKER_01]: so

[01:19:02] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah well I'm going to have to make a

[01:19:04] [SPEAKER_01]: make a trip to come visit you in Florida

[01:19:07] I

[01:19:08] [SPEAKER_01]: have to come off to come visit

[01:19:10] [SPEAKER_03]: shop have you ever come to St. Pete

[01:19:12] [SPEAKER_03]: St. Peter's

[01:19:13] [SPEAKER_03]: no not recently St. Peter's

[01:19:16] [SPEAKER_03]: birds amazing it's amazing

[01:19:19] [SPEAKER_03]: Tampa

[01:19:20] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't like water but St. Pete

[01:19:22] [SPEAKER_03]: is amazing you

[01:19:24] [SPEAKER_03]: would love it it's if you ever

[01:19:26] [SPEAKER_03]: come definitely hit me up

[01:19:28] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh I absolutely will

[01:19:30] [SPEAKER_03]: and then you know we're going to be

[01:19:32] [SPEAKER_01]: talking yes yes

[01:19:34] [SPEAKER_01]: so we're going to do

[01:19:36] [SPEAKER_01]: probably a series with

[01:19:38] [SPEAKER_01]: Lori because

[01:19:39] [SPEAKER_01]: I want to have her on the podcast at least once

[01:19:42] [SPEAKER_01]: a month because she's got so much to share

[01:19:44] [SPEAKER_01]: so we're going to talk different eras

[01:19:46] [SPEAKER_01]: and we're going to talk about different

[01:19:48] [SPEAKER_01]: designs and designers

[01:19:50] [SPEAKER_01]: yep I can't wait so

[01:19:52] [SPEAKER_01]: we're going to have to figure out what our next

[01:19:53] [SPEAKER_01]: topic will be

[01:19:55] [SPEAKER_01]: but don't worry everybody Lori's

[01:19:58] [SPEAKER_01]: coming back

[01:19:59] [SPEAKER_03]: thank you guys thank you for having me

[01:20:02] [SPEAKER_03]: thank you for listening I hope

[01:20:03] [SPEAKER_03]: if you got one nugget one

[01:20:06] [SPEAKER_03]: thing you didn't know out of what

[01:20:08] [SPEAKER_03]: we talked about it was worth your

[01:20:10] [SPEAKER_03]: hour and 20 minutes because

[01:20:11] [SPEAKER_03]: it's fewer

[01:20:13] [SPEAKER_03]: people are going to share that stuff with you

[01:20:16] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm glad that's what you're doing

[01:20:18] [SPEAKER_03]: because it really is important

[01:20:20] [SPEAKER_03]: there's not a resource out there

[01:20:22] [SPEAKER_01]: oh thank you thank you

[01:20:24] [SPEAKER_01]: yes this is I mean doing stuff

[01:20:26] [SPEAKER_01]: like this is my passion you know I love

[01:20:28] [SPEAKER_01]: jewelry and I love connecting with jewelry

[01:20:29] [SPEAKER_01]: people yep so

[01:20:32] [SPEAKER_01]: anything I can do

[01:20:35] [SPEAKER_01]: to support

[01:20:36] [SPEAKER_01]: the community and to build the community

[01:20:38] [SPEAKER_01]: and to share the knowledge I'm all for

[01:20:40] [SPEAKER_01]: it you're a benefit to the community

[01:20:42] [SPEAKER_03]: and if that's you know that's

[01:20:44] [SPEAKER_03]: what makes what we do fun

[01:20:47] [SPEAKER_03]: totally agree

[01:20:47] [SPEAKER_03]: I can't wait to meet you in person

[01:20:49] [SPEAKER_03]: I loved it we'll talk

[01:20:51] [SPEAKER_03]: let me know what you want next month to be about

[01:20:54] [SPEAKER_03]: because it will take me a month to get prepared

[01:20:57] [SPEAKER_03]: yes

[01:20:58] [SPEAKER_03]: my desk looks

[01:20:59] [SPEAKER_03]: like

[01:21:01] [SPEAKER_03]: believe me I fall all the time

[01:21:04] [SPEAKER_01]: like I said to me

[01:21:05] [SPEAKER_01]: I would love to hang out there all day

[01:21:08] [SPEAKER_03]: oh my god we would

[01:21:09] [SPEAKER_03]: dangerous

[01:21:12] [SPEAKER_01]: alright Lori well thank you

[01:21:13] [SPEAKER_01]: so much for your time and your

[01:21:15] [SPEAKER_01]: wealth of knowledge

[01:21:17] [SPEAKER_01]: hate it and look forward to our next talk

[01:21:19] [SPEAKER_01]: yep

[01:21:20] [SPEAKER_03]: happy and soon take care

[01:21:23] [SPEAKER_03]: bye
